I thought I had an original concept for some Steampunk/VSF troops which I figured that I'd have to cobble together from various 28mm plastic figures. I don't generally play this genre, but I need to play test a game and I thought it'd be good to have appropriate figures.

I was visualizing WW1 German-style heads with gas masks and armored torsos – either with Roman-style anatomical breastplates, or Conquistator-style body armor. Legs would be either armored or not and weapons would be large and unwieldy.

Unfortunately, when I started looking for parts, I found nearly the exact figures – Forge World's Death Korps of Krieg. That ruled out "affordable", I suppose.

Don't give up hope yet. Check Wargames Factory "Liberty and Union" for fan-initiated miniatures. Your idea is well on the way to being produced. Check here:

Have you looked at Urban Mammoth's Viridian Marines:

Had to put in for 3 sprues of the Liberty and Union ones.

Prince August Warzone minis are a bit like that too

The Wargames Factory ones have a lot of potential, but it looks like they're still some time out. The Warzone figures, on the other hand, look like they'll work for what I have in mind and, more importantly, are available in a timely manner (assuming I can find them cheaply on this side of the pond).

Olaf: thanks for the link to the prototype. It looks terrific except for the "thumbs up." Can anyone bend their thumb farther than 90 degrees without holding it against something.
Anyway, I am definitely ordering a bunch of these.

I'll second the Void figures, as long as you don't mind them big&chunky.

MERCMinis are a little more slender and higher-tech.

The Ariadnan troops from the Infinity line are probably your best bet, if you only need a few.

Veteran Kazaks and Tankhunters will work pretty much directly, and the Moblot and Scots Grey only need a little work.

Also consider the world of customization. Head swaps, weapon changes, and a little Green Stuff can go a long, long way, while keeping your prices down to a steady bleeding.
