TMP polls are getting dry – but there is one, pressing question that has not yet been subject to a poll here: how many TMPers are moustachioed?

A moustache is a paradox; simultaneously a sign of being unpretentious, down to earth, honest but also mysterious, debonair and other-worldly.

I am not moustachioed but I would dearly love to be able to grow a walrus style 'tache. But whenever I have tried I ended up looking like a walking advert for Gay Pride.

So, come on, Bill, lets have a poll we can all enjoy – Do you have a moustache? And what style is it?

recon3504 Nov 2009 6:09 a.m. PST

I sported a Van Dyke for a while one Christmas. Does that count?

Extra Crispys Evil Twin04 Nov 2009 6:10 a.m. PST

I have a beard and moustache. Does that count?

Angel Barracks04 Nov 2009 6:10 a.m. PST

bald lipped here.

NoLongerAMember04 Nov 2009 6:12 a.m. PST

Well it is vaguely war related…

John has a long Moustache.

dampfpanzerwagon Fezian04 Nov 2009 6:13 a.m. PST

Full moustache since since leaving school – now very grey, almost white!

Ed Mohrmann04 Nov 2009 6:14 a.m. PST

I've had a 'stache for over 40 years…Walrus-type…

Jay Arnold04 Nov 2009 6:15 a.m. PST

I'll grow one on occasion, only if my wife ain't around. With a mustache and my graying temples, I look like J. Jonah Jameson.

My squad members get a kick out of me yelling "Spiderman is a menace!" during training.

floating white bear04 Nov 2009 6:16 a.m. PST

Scared my granddaughter when I shaved it off. At the request of my daughter I grew it back. Rob.

COL Scott104 Nov 2009 6:31 a.m. PST

No way, Army standard 'stache looks too much like Hitler. (that makes it war related)

Also my wife has repeatedly told me she prefers to kiss me smooth shaven….so there it is.

raylev304 Nov 2009 6:37 a.m. PST

I've had a 'stache for 44 years, except for when I shaved it off for one of my promotion boards. My daughter didn't stop laughing and I was scarred for life. With my retirement from the Army, I added a beard.

Martin Rapier04 Nov 2009 6:45 a.m. PST

Clean shaven now, although I did have a moustache and beard at one time.

Tgerritsen Supporting Member of TMP04 Nov 2009 6:52 a.m. PST

Goatee and stache.

FreddBloggs, you beat me to it, that was the first thing I thought of when I read the name of this thread.

This is a good poll for Movember. And for those interested, it is not too late to register!

As for me, I have a full moustache and beard this year, but in years past I have grown a mo to support the cause.

galvinm04 Nov 2009 6:59 a.m. PST

Have had face hair (mustache, beard, goatee, or combination) since leaving the Army. Mainly because I can. After years in the USMC with no facial hair, years in the Army with only the Hitler mustache, I did not even know if I could grow hair on my face. It appears that I can. The wife likes the stache, she thinks it makes me look younger. Friends like the goatee, the family…not so much. After awhile, it just gets itchy, so I usually just shave down to a mustache now.

Goatee and stache…and right now about a weeks facial hair growth…just too lazy to shave…

T Meier04 Nov 2009 7:01 a.m. PST

Only after I drink milk.

Skrapwelder04 Nov 2009 7:15 a.m. PST

Mustache and imperiale goatee. I have been told that without the soul patch I look like Clyde Crashcup

kreoseus204 Nov 2009 7:27 a.m. PST

Beard & tach, grew by accident when I went away for a few days without a razor, just shaved off the easy bits and kept what was left. That was 15 years ago. Much more grey and it will look like I am eating a badger.

Gokiburi04 Nov 2009 7:29 a.m. PST

I've got one, I Try for Toshiro Mifune but end up closer to randy marsh…sigh.

rddfxx04 Nov 2009 7:35 a.m. PST

Full beard and mustache, very salty with some pepper. Modest length at the moment, have been known to grow it out.

Ron W DuBray04 Nov 2009 7:37 a.m. PST

most of my life since the 8 years of it having to shave everyday and sometimes twice. :) I also stopped cutting my hair.

wminsing04 Nov 2009 7:37 a.m. PST

Goatee and a 'stache, when I remember to shave, otherwise full beard and 'stache.

slugbalancer04 Nov 2009 7:37 a.m. PST

Not called Slugbalancer without reason!

jtkimmel04 Nov 2009 7:45 a.m. PST

Wore a mustache for 15 years, got rid of it when it got to be more grey than the hair on top of my head (and my beard would be a patchwork of 3 or 4 colors). Shaving is much quicker now, not having to spend time trimming the mustache.

Personal logo John the OFM Supporting Member of TMP04 Nov 2009 7:49 a.m. PST

I had one for 20 years, but it never looked good. Too many voids…

Bob Applegate04 Nov 2009 7:55 a.m. PST

No 'stache. But I have a soul-patch ala Dizzy Gillespie…

ComradeCommissar04 Nov 2009 8:00 a.m. PST

In college, but we all do foolish things when we're young…

Well, I tend to operate on a "shave once a week" policy (sometimes I go longer). My wife likes the slight growth look (ala Indy and Aragorn), and I'm a writer so I don't have to artificially impress anyone with beard grooming, except on occasion. But I also don't really hit "full beard/moustache" length as it starts to get itchy the closer I get to that (and the grey becomes dominant), which signals the return of the razor.

Steve04 Nov 2009 8:24 a.m. PST

Yes.

OK, thats not really me thank god.

dormant account04 Nov 2009 8:26 a.m. PST

A razor hasn't touched my face in nearly 10yrs…..

BW195904 Nov 2009 8:29 a.m. PST

yes, with beard

richarDISNEY04 Nov 2009 8:32 a.m. PST

I grow a beard when its ski season (for the warmth), but usually not.

I really want to grow one like this… picture
Or not…

Porthos04 Nov 2009 8:40 a.m. PST

Yes. First: Guy de Maupassant said: "A kiss by a man without a moustache is like eating an egg without salt" (however I have no idea how he could know that). Second: when I agreed a client to meet in a restaurant I could always tell hem: "Look for the guy with the moustache of a Mexican bandit". Never failed.
I have had a beard for years too, but according to my wife I still look younger than with beard although I shaved that off many years ago….

AGamer04 Nov 2009 8:44 a.m. PST

Beard and mustache for the past 22 years and on and off for another 15 years prior.

King Monkey04 Nov 2009 8:49 a.m. PST

Growing a beard for winter.

Ambush Alley Games04 Nov 2009 8:58 a.m. PST

It's amazing how often I'm asked this question, usually by people I'm face to face with.

lutonjames04 Nov 2009 8:59 a.m. PST

Never! Goatees remind me of Royalists (boo). Almost all other moustaches ar5e for gay pride marches, coppers and pyschos (often in the army).

Beard and mustache is Open university types. Beards without mustache are for religious nutters.

A few people can pull off a beard and/or mustache, no-one can pull off beard without mustache (whoops looks like i'm back peddeling- but thought someone should should come out with some popular prejudices).

Though a handel bar mustache is impressive for someone (ushally a man) in their 50's plus.

I expect Wargamers are more likely than most of the public (to have a moustache), it's a sign that we don't care what others think if we like it- we do it!

Personal logo FingerAndToeModels Sponsoring Member of TMP04 Nov 2009 9:12 a.m. PST

Yep. Began growing it the day I turned in my papers to get out of the Air Force (Viet Nam was ending, to give you a time frame) and have had it ever since. It's as close as I ever got to being a hippie. For some reason the color seems to be fading.

Tommy2004 Nov 2009 9:32 a.m. PST

Not currently. I rotate having one and not every five years or so. The last one included a soul patch, as I was heavily into ACW reenacting at the time. I guess I'm about due to grow it back.

BTW, let's get our terminology straight. A Goatee does not include hair above the lip. That would make it a Van Dyke.

Robert V04 Nov 2009 9:32 a.m. PST

Beard and moustache for me. Wore a goatee back in the early 90s but just gave up on all the "shave in the lines" nonsence. I do keep it close trimed though as a thick beard gets itchy.

Pictors Studio04 Nov 2009 9:37 a.m. PST

It is immoral to not shave your upper lip. Otherwise beards are fine.

Highland Guerilla04 Nov 2009 9:37 a.m. PST

As a hairy Scotsman it's more of a case of the moustache wearing me.My girls get weirded out when it falls off,it looks like Pa Broons in the eponymous comic strip.

Connard Sage04 Nov 2009 9:38 a.m. PST

A moustache is a paradox; simultaneously a sign of being unpretentious, down to earth, honest but also mysterious, debonair and other-worldly.

It tends to mark you down as a mate of Dorothy around these parts…

I grow a mustache when I'm deployed, because the wife can't effectively pressure me to shave it off while I'm away. But if I'm home I either have to grow it all out or shave it all. And with the army day job I just have to shave it all anyway.

Doug em4miniatures04 Nov 2009 9:49 a.m. PST

"Soul patch"?

Doug

Connard Sage04 Nov 2009 9:58 a.m. PST

"Soul patch"?

Little bit of hair under the bottom lip, Doug. Probably grown by blokes who would like a full beard but who only need to shave every other other day.

For once I agree with Phil the Greek

Top Gun Ace04 Nov 2009 10:01 a.m. PST

Yes.

Not too thin, and not too thick…..

Martin04 Nov 2009 10:02 a.m. PST

Moustache and beard here. Christmas day will be 21 years since I did a full shave. Just shave the neck/cheeks once a week and get the beard mowed once in awhile.

mex10mm04 Nov 2009 10:04 a.m. PST

Yes I do have a Moustache.
Shaved it once since age 17 and that was only for my military service.
