Just watched this excellent film on DVD last night and at the start is says that it is a true story…Can anyone elaborate--Was there a real Captain Anson and a real Katy???

I don't know, but I'm jealous that you've got it on DVD. No sign of it over here in the States (sniff).

Do you not have multi-region DVD players?

Dropship Horizon30 Oct 2009 4:19 p.m. PST

The film was based on a novel by Christopher Landon which in turn was allegedly based on his experiences in a Field Ambulance unit in the desert. Truth as they say…..

They changed the name to Desert Attack for the US release and cut the runtime from 129 to just 76min so get a UK one if you can.

Yes, a great film. Mini-biography of the author of the book here: link

It's a great film.

In the UK, they clipped a section from the scene in the bar at the end, and used it has a Heineken advert!

They changed the name to Desert Attack for the US release

And the tagline was something like "Three guys and two girls!"

Carlsberg?

Chortle Fezian31 Oct 2009 5:45 a.m. PST

Yes, it is a great film. Several undone buttons on the actresses shirt caused a scandal at the time of release.

Oh, maybe it was Carlsberg! :-)

This film was one of a number of classics. The Cruel Sea is another one (and they used part of this for an ad as well, but I cannot find it).

There's a nice Series 1 Landrover in the background as they drive the Anthony Quayle charcter away at the end….

Tedious link, my dad met the author and he was not very complimentary about Landon, dying of a drink and drugs overdose sounds about right.

John Mills said the filming of the last seen of that movie was the best bit of work he ever did, they had to use real larger and the shot took several takes.

koyli6802 Nov 2009 2:55 a.m. PST

The book is excellent but in the book it is the sergeant major who gets the girl not the Captain…..but then woulf Sylvia Sims really pick Harry Andrews over John Mills and would John Mills have made a believable Sergeant major???

cameronian02 Nov 2009 3:51 a.m. PST

Mmmmmmm, Carlsberg.
