I have some Persian shields – Crusader 28mm Sparabatha (like a rectangular Pavise)
These should have geometric designs
- zigzag stripes
- outlines of diamonds

I do not think there are any transfers available.

Does anybody have any good ideas for doing this – perhaps masking tape or similar?
Thanks
Mick

Presumably the zigzags are build up by painting the little rectangles on the shield design? I think you are just going to need patience and a steady hand, Mick! An inkwash at the end might help.

IIRC the rectangles are formed by leather strips knitted together into a lattice, so there will be a logic as to which rectangles are one colout, and which another.

I would prime then use a technical drawing pen to make designs. then I find it easier to block in colors and I still have a nice black/brown outline that "pops".
labor intensive but comes out nice. I don't know if it would be of any use ,but there is a product called magic mask(squadron/) that u paint on then peel off later -better than tape

I've painted hundreds of them. I don't think taping them would be much quicker or easier than just doing the designs by hand. It actually sounds like a nightmare.

Thanks everybody for the tips so far.
