I find it rude to comment on fellow players' height or other physical attributes. I call them fellow gamers or by their names.

aecurtis Fezian29 Oct 2009 6:55 p.m. PST

I call them "toy soldiers" with pride. I do, however, cringe, when the distaff side refers to "playing with your little guys".

Heroes … every man-jack of them!

redbanner414529 Oct 2009 6:57 p.m. PST

My daughter knows them as the little people.

Whatisitgood4atwork29 Oct 2009 7:07 p.m. PST

Toy soldiers.

When someone asks me if I have a hobby, I also find saying 'I play with toy soldiers' conveys the idea much better and more quickly than 'I'm a wargamer'.

Sysiphus29 Oct 2009 7:12 p.m. PST

Toy soldiers. Please!

Crow Bait29 Oct 2009 7:17 p.m. PST

Each 7,500 of mine are individually named.

Just Kidding, I call them miniatures.

rusty musket29 Oct 2009 7:20 p.m. PST

It varies and depends on who I am telling it to. I usually say my hobby is military history and I paint toy soldiers or miniature soldiers. (I have not really gamed in years, so I rarely bring that up anymore.)

Coyotepunc and Hatshepsuut29 Oct 2009 7:27 p.m. PST

With people who are "in the know," I generally refer to them by army or warband name, occasionally with the game name as a reference; "my New Kingdom Egyptians" or "my Warhammer Fantasy Beastmen." To the uninitiated (such as a first date or coworker) they are my "model soldiers." I usually get some very interested questions when I mention it…

I tell my sons & wife they're "Historical military miniatures for the reenactment of military history in miniature" – and they respond with, "You mean your dolls?"

Bill, or George, anything but Sue.

Figs or Minis, usually. "Miniature Figures" when talking to a non-cognoscente.

Jay Arnold30 Oct 2009 1:30 a.m. PST

Me: Figs, figures or minis

Wife: Geek crap (collective term involving anything hobby-related)

My late mom: Critters

Patrick R30 Oct 2009 3:09 a.m. PST

Minis or figures.

Anybody calling them "poppetjes" should have molten lead poured down their throats.

Ed Mohrmann30 Oct 2009 4:33 a.m. PST

Variants, to include most of the terms upthread.

But always 'toy soldiers' to the uninitiated…

The Sentient Bean30 Oct 2009 4:54 a.m. PST

I call them figs.

I tell people I paint naked germanic barbarians in miniature. Usually gets a few laughs.

alien BLOODY HELL surfer30 Oct 2009 5:02 a.m. PST

useless bar-stewards most of the time (it's that or blame the dice!)

minis/miniatures
figs/figures
model soldiers

COL Scott130 Oct 2009 5:06 a.m. PST

My youngest son started calling them "good guys" and the name has stuck. Now the entire family calls them the same thing, and of course now all sides are "good guys" no bad guys here.

Schogun30 Oct 2009 5:07 a.m. PST

I start with "miniatures," but when I get the quizzical look, I have to revert to "toy soldiers."

photocrinch Supporting Member of TMP30 Oct 2009 5:12 a.m. PST

Thanks to my family they are known simply as "little metal men". Typically I'll call them toy soldiers to the unitiated.

TodCreasey30 Oct 2009 5:14 a.m. PST

Figs, although the wife and daughter call them guys

Marshal Mark30 Oct 2009 5:24 a.m. PST

Figures, definitely. Everyone I have ever heard talk about them in the UK calls them figures. I think minis is American. Some people (maybe older gamers ?) call them castings, which sounds wierd to me.

Rod Robertson30 Oct 2009 5:30 a.m. PST
