I find it rude to comment on fellow players' height or other physical attributes. I call them fellow gamers or by their names. |
aecurtis | 29 Oct 2009 6:55 p.m. PST |
I call them "toy soldiers" with pride. I do, however, cringe, when the distaff side refers to "playing with your little guys". Allen |

Toy soldiers. When someone asks me if I have a hobby, I also find saying 'I play with toy soldiers' conveys the idea much better and more quickly than 'I'm a wargamer'. |

It varies and depends on who I am telling it to. I usually say my hobby is military history and I paint toy soldiers or miniature soldiers. (I have not really gamed in years, so I rarely bring that up anymore.) |

With people who are "in the know," I generally refer to them by army or warband name, occasionally with the game name as a reference; "my New Kingdom Egyptians" or "my Warhammer Fantasy Beastmen." To the uninitiated (such as a first date or coworker) they are my "model soldiers." I usually get some very interested questions when I mention it

| Schogun | 30 Oct 2009 5:07 a.m. PST |
I start with "miniatures," but when I get the quizzical look, I have to revert to "toy soldiers." |

Thanks to my family they are known simply as "little metal men". Typically I'll call them toy soldiers to the unitiated. |

| Marshal Mark | 30 Oct 2009 5:24 a.m. PST |
Figures, definitely. Everyone I have ever heard talk about them in the UK calls them figures. I think minis is American. Some people (maybe older gamers ?) call them castings, which sounds wierd to me. |
