Hey Guys, I'm starting up a 20mm Hungarian army, and was thinking of painting up some of these panzers to provide some holf decent armour support. I'm planning on using the Italeri plastic kits, unless i can get a hold of any of the revell ones on ebay. I've seen Hungarian Panzer IVs depicted either in german dunkelgelb with the Hungarian cross, and also with the Hungarian olive/brown/ochre camo. Any ideas on what colours these should be? |

I used German Panzer Grey, with the Hungarian cross for my Pz IVs. Any Hungarian supplied AFV, I used the 3 color camo. Have fun; Joep |

Yes, Hungarian built stuff, the 3 colour scheme. Any German kit, as from the factory but with Hungarian cross and markings. So, up to Stalingrad (F1, F2s mainly, supplied late 41), the Grey, Galicia 44 onwards,(later models)dark yellow. |

I'm starting up a 20mm Hungarian army, and was thinking of painting up some of these panzers to provide some holf decent armour support. But the Hungarian made tanks are very cool too. The Turan has a charm all of its own and Hungarians aren't really about having decent tanks anyway! Well ok you can have a Zrynyi or two. |

Thanks Guys, Dunkelgelb it is then! Fred: I agree regarding the Hungarian armour – it's actuallt the reason i chose the Hungarians! I'm building up a battle group for IABSM. I've ordered a company's worth of Infantry, a skoda gun, a Turan II and a Toldi. The Panzer IVs are going to hopefully allow them to stand up to the mass of T-34s which my Soviet opponents will most likely end up fielding! |

Another question for you gents: Does anyone know if the Hungarian Panzer IVs would have been supplied with Schurzen and zimmerit? I've been eyeing off the milicast offerings. |

This is a generalization published by Battlefront as "fact", and in fact, it isn't so simple. Some Hungarian operated German equipment -was- painted in Hungarian colors. It was only the early stuff that arrived at the front line and was universally left in Panzer Grey; this was truer earlier on since they were needed in combat and sent off to the front, and also because much of the German equipment initially alloted to the Honved was "on loan." (The Marder IIIs are an excellent example of the latter, the Panzer 38g an example of the former.) A lot of the equipment received during 1943 was painted in Hungarian colors, since the Honved was in a "rebuilding stage" following the disaster on the Don. There were also examples of both painting styles in 44 and 45. The most common approach was to paint a vehicle in medium green, but three color camo vehicles can also be found, if you look through enough photographs. I have never seen photographs of Hungarian tanks with Zimmermit, nor have I read any reference in Hungarian sources. I suppose it's possible that some of the worn out equipment given from mid-late 44 on would have it (Tigers and Panthers, for example), since many German tanks were factory built with the Zimmermit option, but I don't think the practice was universal. Schurzen were often fitted, however, frequently by the Hungarians themselves. -A. |
