Consul Keith at Aventine, and a newly recruited Tribune, Craig Davey, have taken the completed legionaries we need for the SOA Zama day rather past the 25% mark; it seems a good time to show initial pictures of the Romans, so far:-

Looking really good, Simon, congratulations. The common basing scheme really sets them off and makes them look like parts of the same army.

Thanks Paul! I like the way yours are coming along, too.

Hi James, yes they are cut down from LBMS transfers. I use these with my Greeks, too.

Cheers,

Simon

Hi Simon,

I'm following your project with interrest. You don't happen to know a company that sells seperate 28mm vexilla (if that's what they call the cloth cross bar standards?) do you?

I'm just in the process of finishing the hastati for the two Roman bits of a double consular army.

Hi James, I happened to pick up a pack of Foundry vexilla type standards in a bargain bucket at Claymore last year. There's no way I'll use them all, so I'm quite happy to send a bunch of them to you if you want them. I can't remember how many there are, but I can check later this evening. I'm in Glasgow, by the way, so barring postal strikes it should be relatively easy to send them.

Cheers

Simon, looking good for Zama! I have some units from Aventine and waiting for my other unit of cav,but it will be next year before they are painted. I do have 80% of a Republican legion painted! They are Crusaders! Cheers Mike

I also have some Gorgon to paint, that Mary, my lovely wife will be buying for me for my birthday! Cheers Mike

Hi Mike!

James, The Vexilla are from Aventine. You might like to contact them because they do also a nice range of standards (Horse, Bull, Eagle IIRC), and because their figures are a broadly similar size to your Renegades. They would be useful if you want more variety in the command figures (IIRC Renegade only do one or two officer poses).

Cheers, Simon

Great collective effort coming on really well. Given the formidable nature of these guys it is a wonder that the first two Carthaginian lines stood up as well as they did! I pity those poor levies………

I see that Gorgon will be moving into Republican Roman territory soon and also offering a discount to SOA members.

BTW which figures will be used for the Carthaginian veterans?

Hi Garry,

We've gone Crusader for the Veterans. They are underway, but I may not see them 'til the day!

An issue for Gorgon will be the VAT imposed by the UK Government on inports over £18, and the huge £8.00 GBP handling charge that the Royal mail stick on top; this is a powerful disincentive from buying anything from outside the EU. I hope Gorgon can find a UK manufacturer or importer, because I really like their stuff…

I do like those Crusader figures – which Dave Pauwels has painted so well on his site.

Cheers Garry

Hi Garry,

Happily I do have a box full of the Crusader/A&A Spanish! Hopefully I'll have time to paint them, next year… not going to be as nice as Dave P's, though!

Quite a few of them were yours, Mike! Chmoneers, Si

Hi James, I checked out the standards I have yesterday evening, and it's a blister pack of about thirty "Immortal Standards". They are square and have no frills on any edges, so I reckon they are meant to be standards made of wood or something. They definitely don't look like cloth vexilla, but they are still usable unit standards. In fact, I have a bunch of old Naismith 25mm Alexandrian Companions that need re-doing, and I'm thinking of giving them one of these standards with a 15mm Macedonian star from Veni Vidi Vici on it. Not a bad find for 50p.

You can still have some if you want them, though!

BigRedBat, I checked out your blog and I must say that you're doing an amazing job. It's very inspiring.

I am jealous of all the excellently painted minis you have! I really need to step up my output.

vojvoda28 Oct 2009 5:50 a.m. PST

Guys for Vexilla, try Warlords as they have them in a set of Roman Standards and if you are looking JUST for Vexilla Essex has them as singles and I think either New Line (might be discontinued) and Navigator do as well.

Thanks Bean!

Re Warlord Vexilla, I have some but somewhat prefer the Aventine ones, which are a bit more substantial (the Warlord poles are very thin). Maybe Keith could be persuaded to sell a pack of different standards?

I used a Garrison vexilla for my Galatians- it has a nice little victory figure on the top:-

Simon; unbelievable! I'm so jealous!

We molded the Vexilla for our Etruscan 2nd Class command pack solo and will be offering that seperately. As is the plan for all of our accessory items.

Images will be going on the website shortly. Short term if someone is interested just drop me an email at hank@gorgon-studios.com.

Looking good Simon!

Thanks very much guys; but most of the credit must go to Keith's brush. I'm watching Olicana's (James above) legions on the other thread; he seems to be growing it twice as fast as all 3 of us are managing!

Cheers, Simon
