Last time I was serious about WW2 I was playing Spearhead. Like every other rule we've used set the guys got together and morphed it into something that we all felt looked right and carried the right period feel in terms of results. Became a set of house rules more than anything really.

'Twas a long time and many area codes ago. I am wondering in any of the newer sets are woth looking at? Is it worth looking at FoW and re-scale to micro? I want to retain the divisional aspect based on looks and the fact that I already have the pieces. Any suggestions as to what I should be looking at?

I'm keen to get a ruleset that works right out of the box so as to indoctrinate the unsuspecting a little easier. . . .

FoW uses squads and teams and individual pieces of equipment. So, out of the box, it is not what you are looking for. Try Rapid Fire for a higher level game. If you want something more technical, maybe Kampfgroupe Commander would be the game for you.

Try Blitzkrieg Commander, platoon level, up to brigades or even a division.

Good solid fun game.

… but do be aware that they are issuing version 2 of BKC very soon: looks like I might get my pre-order before Christmas (Royal mail permitting) :o)

Try Panzer Korps for Divisional level combat. Great set of rules by Hoplite Games, and quite well supported. They've issued books covering the Soviets, US, Italians, French, Minor Allied Nations, and Hungary. The Brits, several German books and the Japanese are in progress. They also have some campaign books out as well.

If you've got stuff based for Spearhead, then it will work for pretty well any of the other 1 base = 1 platoon sets, and you can also use it for 1 base = 1 company and 1 base = 1 battalion. Might work for lower level games too like FOW, PBI2, IABSM etc but you may have to paint some more stuff.

For brigade level games, BKC has already been mentioned, but you might also want to have a look at the latest incarnation of Command Decision (CD IV).

For company-battalion level games, FOW works fine with 6mm. You might also want to have a look at PBI2 from Peter Pig and Arty Conliffes older but still glorious 'Crossfire'.

There are lots of division/corps level rules out there, Panzer Korps has already been mentioned, and I have a soft spot for Megablitz. A really fun game though, and one which would work fine with your SH stuff is 'KISS Rommel' – freewargamesrules.co.uk. A game not a simulation. Hurrah Stalino is also fast and fun.
