Hey When you paint, do you find yourself painting more due to: 1) Under the ‘gun'? i.e. " I need these troops for the game this week!!!" 2) Take your time, finding enjoyment in it itself. "Well, I like the look of this fig for one of my games, so I am gunna paint it, even though I don't need it right now." 3) Like the look of a fig and paint it, even though it's a fig you have no games for. "Well, I love the look of this Werner Klocke elf maiden, but I don't play fantasy games
" 4) Not a painter. I find myself doing all of the top three. But mostly #1.

Probably #1 for me. Most of my painting is for upcoming games. Although this year, my work on the Great Gaul project probably falls outside that statement -- spent 9 months on those guys and still have 100 or so to go. mjc |

It's alternately 1 and 2 for me, but NEVER 3 (and of course, 4). I actually prefer under the gun, since I can stay with the project easier and not get distracted by something shiny. |

I do a bit of 1-3 but many for 1 and more for 2 than 3. I do commission work and I have personal projects and events. I guess you'd say I'm well rounded on the painting front. |

Mostly 2 + 3. But I have painted under the gun for a couple of games

Normally always number two. Sometimes I forget that I started out painting to play games. At least I have a sense of accomplishment when I can post pictures on here of finished troops. Jeff |

Momentum thing. Once I start, the painting bug can last for weeks. Then suddenly
stops and I don't do any more for a while. |

1 and 2. If I'm under the gun I get focused and actually finish something up. When I'm painting for fun, well that's why there are 26 projects going at the same tim

1,2.3 3 is what I enjoy the most. |

#2 most of the time, but occasionally #1 as well, for convention deadlines. Those always seem to creep up far too quickly, despite my best attempts at pre-planning. |

I cycle between #1 and #2. After cranking out a bunch of one thing/system for a set game date (such as me for Fall In right now), I get sick of 'enforced' painting and paint a little of this and a little of that just for the fun. |

I enjoy painting the odd figure. I loathe having to paint armies. |

I used to hate painting because I was so slow and my end product so poor. Then I discovered dip and wash techniques. I painted figures in half the time and they looked better. Once I started enjoying it (after years when I didn't) the rest of my technique improved. |

1 about 75% of the time and then some 2 (which is why I am trying to avoid starting too many things – I would like more 2). But I have just started using the dip and it has doubled my productivity and although I am still getting the hang of it (Future was a bit of a challenge) I think it is going to be a keeper. |

2. The only deadline I paint too is the guilt of having been paid up front by a friend and being slow in getting his stuff done. Otherwise I paint to relax and play with them once they're done. |
| Martin Rapier | 23 Oct 2009 6:17 a.m. PST |
I rarely paint stuff for a specific game with a hard deadline (what a dreadful idea!), I do however have various projects and scenarios in mind so I buy and paint stuff for those, which I guess is a '2'. I will often design scenarios specifically to use new toys I've done, but some things wait a fair while to get used. I think the record is the Nashorn I converted from an Airfix Panzer IV back in the mid 1970s, and only had its first game outing earlier this year. Now, that is preparation. Hmm, I've got some Comets and Cromwells I need to do for two very spcific scenarios, so maybe that is a '1'? but there isn't any deadline to do them. |

Hurried deadlines are the requirement for #1
If you have a few models, but don't need them RIGHT NOW!!!, then #2.

Painting is the bain of my existance. But then I'm not that good at it. |

#2 when I can manage it. #1 when I have a game coming up and want to use something that's on the painting table. Or let's face it, sometimes I just decide a figure or unit has been on the painting bench too long and it's time to finish it. Long ago I gave up on #3
I paint figures so I can play games with them, and although I may pick an arbitrary figure because of how it looks, it's always from the subset of figures suitable for whatever game I'm painting for. |
