Can anyone recommend colonial rules for the Sudan using 10mm figures.

Depends what you are looking for in a game.

The Peter Pig "Patrols in the Sudan" rules give a very fun game at the patrol level. They work out to about 1:1 scale with about 30-75 figures per side, fewer for the Anglo-Egyptians, higher for the Mahdists. Very nice rules for fog of war and hidden movement for the Mahdists. These are not a big battle set, nor 1:1 skirmish set. They concern Patrols of 3-5 units or so each of up to 8 bases.

If you like a heavy dash oif roleplay with your gaming Howard Whitehouse's "Science vs Pluck, or Too Much for the Mahdi" give a fun game. Players take on the roles of British officers, the GM plays the Mahdist forces.

Field of Battle from Piquet gives a fast moving game with best elements of Piquet combined with a tradition style wargame. These cover 18th-19th Centuries, so they are not a specificly Sudan set, but they give a good feel.

Din of Battle2 is the Piquet supplement covering the Colonial wars in detail. If you like Piquet these are great, if you don't like Piquet, you won't like these.

All of the above will work with 10mm figures, and all will work with the same basing.

PS the "Sudan Sourcebook" volumes 1&2 from the Virtual Armchair General are fantastic for the period.

Featherstones Ospreys are good, but these are a gold mine.

You could also play 1-1 with The Sword and the Flame, or use 800 Fighting Englishmen -- the big battle version of TSATF.

Battles for Empire is a big battles set of colonial rules.

'They don't like it up 'em' (TDLIUE) by TooFatLardies. These appear in one of the Chirstmas Specials, I think it's the 2008 one.

For me the best Sudan rules I've played by a long way. They work for large skirmishes, big battles and for one, two or more players. Masses of character but fast and smooth to play and at only £5.00 GBP they've got to be worth a look. They have characters in them and this aspect is easy to develop or play down if your less keen on that approach. The games I have played have been close and exciting.

I went with 28mm figures but they would be very suitable for 10mm and in fact I wished that was the option I'd taken.

PITS would work really well, especially if you use multiple 10mm figures on a 30mm x 30mm base, keeping everything else the same. Pendraken do everything you'd need too, except for casualties?

A few guys at my gaming club have been using "Battles For Empire 1870-1902" for their Colonial fights. From what I saw, the system is very easy to learn.

Battles For Empire uses four stands to represent a company of troops or a rub of Dervishes. The movement is similar to the Fire & Fury charts with D6s thrown for fire combat and melee(usually four per unit). The rules are pretty comprehensive and look long, but play pretty well. We use 15mm figs on the 25mm stand sizes, so you could do some incredible bases if you are using 10mm. Here's some pics of our BFE game from this pst Friday night and they'll be up for two weeks:

You might also want to try Clash of Iron. Although written for ancients it works really well for Zulu War and Sudan.

Principles of War work well; but the turn sequence was never to my groups liking. Used the rules to run a very large Omderman (sp) game that went off successfully.
Tim Goodlett had a set out many years ago called, Savage Wars of Piece. They played well; had double charts for fire/melee if memory serves. They had some nice scenarios and maps at the back; I still use them.

I plan on using Too Fat Lardies' "TDLIUE". I wish there were more scenarios for them & possibly a Zulu variant, but I think they have some nice period flavor. Not to be mercenary but if you are interested in Principles of War or Battles for Empire, I am selling both off in the marketplace section for cheap. Thanks!

For larger battles try "Blood & Sand." Has rules for both the early and later campaigns.
