That would be pretty limited to either the Ram or the M4A1 both of which used the Wright Cyclone or the Valentine which I beleive was a GM diesel. Were they made here??? |

I think many of the Canadian Shermans used the "multibank" engine which was 5 automobile engines arranged around a common drive shaft. I don't know if these engines were built in Canada or by Chrysler in the US. There's a pic of the engine pack on this page: link |

I think Troopwo has it. My copy of "Making Tracks – Tank Production in Canada" by Clive M. Law says that only two engines were used in Canadian tank production. Valentine tanks used the GMC 6-cylinder, 2-cycle diesel. RAM, Grizzly tanks and the Sexton SPG used the Wright (Continental) R-975 9-cylinder, radial, air-cooled engine. According to the same book all the engines were manufactured in the United States. In fact one of the problems for Canadian tank production was ensuring an adequate supply of these engines from American factories, which also had supply American tank production facilities. The Canadian Army mostly (we only made 188 Grizzlys, the Canadian version of the Sherman, and not many of those made it overseas) used Shermans manufactured in the United States so you would see plenty of pictures of Canadian Army Shermans with a "multibank" engine, they just weren't made in Canada. Hope this helps. |

As GM and Ford both made engines in Canada at the time i'd say it was 50/50 whether an engine in the multi-bank engines was American or Canadian, or parts assembled from both countries. |

I posted this to wardog in another previous thread about "WW2 vehicles in use past the war". TMP link "So far as I know the Wright R-975 Whirlwind was license built by Continental Motors and used in the Canadian Ram,Skink,Sexton and Kangaroo too. Along with the Sherman,M7,M3,M18,M12 GMC and M40 GMC." Robert |
