Well, back in December 2007, I was so proud of my game room that I posted this thread on the subject:

TMP link

However, during these last two years a few things have happened:

1) My two gaming buddies have been unable to game. My best friend was transferred to India and my nephew has been extremely busy with school and work;
2) Work has kept me from being home. For two years I've been on the road about 9 or 10 months out of the year; and
3) My wife now has her office at home. She tried to make it work using a tiny corner of the dining room, but it simply was not fair to her, when I had an entire room that had not been used in two years.

So, this is what it looks like now . . .

link

This week was an exercise in wizardry, as I used up just about every plastic bin and box to store about a million things. Believe it or not, almost all my stuff is in the closet of that room (I'll take a picture of it when I can). The rest (terrain tools and materials) are in the garage.

Anyway, please join me in a moment of silence, for my short-lived dream of having a game room.

GarnhamGhast19 Oct 2009 6:52 a.m. PST

I feel your pain. Have a beer.

Sysiphus19 Oct 2009 7:00 a.m. PST

I congratulate you in making the right choice. A sacrifice to be sure; but I;m sure your wife feels you have "stepped up to the plate" and made the right decision.

Perhaps the garage can be made to meet your needs on a temporary basis, weather permitting?

You mentioned a dining room. Get yourself a nice padded table cover and use terrain boards on the protected dining room table for those now infrequent games. It's what I used to do when I lived in an apartment.

My condolences are more for you having so few people to game with locally, especially given the energy and enthusiasm you exhibit in your gaming interests.

Take it in stride CC, and add "…for now" to the end of that.

Everything comes back around.

I hear there's a corner of the dining room going spare….in 2 years you could have the WHOLE dining room, then expnd through the kitchen…naval games in the bathroom….

jpattern219 Oct 2009 7:48 a.m. PST

Bummer, CC. I'm sure you'll get it back one day.

Reminds me of a commercial for some sicom about married couples.

Recently Married Guy: "A man's mome is HIS!"

Guy Married for a Few Years: "A man's home is his castle."

Guy Who's Ben Married for a Long Time: "A man's home….is the garage."

I've been married for 13 years and my wife is encroaching on my basement refuge.

a moment o silence observed.

I'm fairly sure I'll never have a dedicated Room until
Both Kids are off to College;
I currently have stuff spread through the entire House: most aggravating!!!

I have to kick the kids out of the loft 'play room'
if I want to set up a week-end table:
that's where the Wii and Kid TV-VCR-DVD are set up.

Someday….<sigh>

Dan,

Sorry to hear about your loss. As I was looking at the pictures though I had to ask how you did the grassy areas on your boards. Were these the rolled railroad grass sheets glued down or what? Fantastic terrain and minis! I hope that you will have more time and folks to game with soon. Cheers.

Guys, thanks so much for your sympathy during this transition.

My game room is in a useless part of the house. It's in my cellar, right by the washer and dryer.
I am also divorced, so that helps.

Deeman19 Oct 2009 8:58 a.m. PST

I mourn your loss.

wrgmr119 Oct 2009 9:13 a.m. PST

Tis a shame….really. However if you don't use it, sometimes you lose it.
Nice office.

Mike G19 Oct 2009 9:57 a.m. PST

My wife has always had stuff and I have had junk.

Custer7thcav19 Oct 2009 9:58 a.m. PST

Now that a moment has been observed silently, a few reflections to add.

I had a game room when I lived alone.

Right now I have storage at home and I game at my office a few times in the year.

I have already discussed with the wife that when we buy a house, I get the basement for a game room/office/library/den or also known as "mancave"

known to the wife as where I keep my "toys"

Dan, You did a good thing for your lovely bride. fear not, opportunities will come for you to expand your gaming. Maintain your passion in planning projects as you have and you will have plenty of projects when space becomes available.

Cheers!

Albert

I simply put a door lock on my cave, shut it and growled at every mention of 'it would be nice for guests….' she came up with. She eventually accepted the other three floors as hers and left my stinky cave alone.

You still done the right thing!

CeruLucifus19 Oct 2009 10:31 a.m. PST

You made the right choice, and as mentioned, when your infrequent games happen, you can use the dining room or garage. When the games get more frequent, you can discuss what needs to change. Maybe it's time to finish the garage!

Sorry to hear that. Makes me value mine all that much more.

The cool thing is that things change. Eventually, the opportunity will return for you. You have good karma!

Take care Dan.

Never give up.

Never surrender.

Play where you must.

Play where you can.

But play on.

Jim

And if your wife puts up with you being gone that much, she's a keeper.

CmdrKiley19 Oct 2009 11:33 a.m. PST

One day my wife came down to the basement to look for more expansion space for her growing shoe collection and to complain that there was too much 'scary stuff' down there and she felt uncomfortable coming down.

I explained to her my stuff is like the gargoyles, they're supposed to scare off the the evil spirits and things that don't belong there.

Captain Apathy19 Oct 2009 1:16 p.m. PST

Major bummer, but if its any solace, you made the right decision.

Rassilon19 Oct 2009 2:26 p.m. PST

That's depressing…

mjkerner19 Oct 2009 2:54 p.m. PST

Dude, you did the right thing, and you have earned beaucoup brownie points for future situations in which discretion may not have been the better part of valor.

Shagnasty Supporting Member of TMP19 Oct 2009 3:09 p.m. PST

"Sometimes the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the one." You and Spock, real heroes. Now, by a bigger house with a mancave. You are making lots of overtime pay, right?

Gabriel Landowski Fezian20 Oct 2009 3:59 p.m. PST

Duuuuuuuuude – she sooooooooooooo planned that! Women (especially wives) work like that!

PS: You're a good husband….

jimborex23 Oct 2009 10:30 p.m. PST

Give and take. Relationships and life are like that. They ebb. They flow. Five years from now, you may find yourself with more gaming time and the pendulum will swing the other way.
