Here's a question from a napoleonic newbie. Did French infantry 1806-1813 have different colored pom-poms on their shakos within the same unit. And why? Thanks

here is a good wikipedia site:

French Battalions were organized into 6 companies after 1808 (4 fusiler, one voltigeur, and a grenadier) Each of the fusiler companies had a differnt colored pom pom (first green, second sky blue, third orange and the fourth violet)
The grenadiers wore red plumes and voltigeurs wore yellow over green plumes.

voltigeurs wore yellow over green plumes

Or green over yellow, or some other combination involving green and/or yellow with yet another color, depending on the regiment. Yellow over green is the regulation scheme and was used by most regiments, but even there, the proportions varied a lot, if contemporary artists can be believed.
