I've not posted in over a year or so as I've been very ill. However that is behind me now and I'm pleased to say that I'm almost fully recovered. As I haven't been able to sculpt for over a year I thought I'd start with something a bit bigger than I have done in the past, so I sculpted and painted a Cthulhu.

Here he is (with a 28mm figure for comparison):

I really enjoyed sculpting something this big and I think I'll do a few more large sculpts to get back into the groove.

Cheers for now.

I love it!!! Well-sculpted and wellpainted. Did you chronicle its creation? I've been looking to sculpt a Cthulhu, or another elder being, and it'd be nice to see how someone else went about doing it. If you don't, this piece is inspiration enough!

Greenstuff? Sculpey? Other sculpting material?

And glad to hear you're back and healthy! Can't wait to see more of your creations.

Holy Frijoles! It looks great. Interesting take on the elephantine legs. Excellent paint. Welcome back.

Fantastic piece. You've got some talent there or made a deal with some supernatural power.

Acharnement16 Oct 2009 4:30 p.m. PST

Alarming. I was expecting a statue-like pose but yours has considerably more menace. The sculpting and the painting combine to have real impact. That's a little too real in fact.

The Old Ones are Pleased :-) Well done, sir.

Cripes, that's good.

More important – good that you're feeling better!

Wow! I lost 1d20 SAN just for clicking on those links!
Love the little blowholes on the side of the neck. One of the best Cthulhus I've seen.

Great over all…but the head…best Big C head, hands down.

Sparrowhawk Inactive Member17 Oct 2009 3:00 a.m. PST

Wow! Thanks for all the compliments guys. It's good to be back and sculpting again.

Evilcartoonist I didn't take any WIP shots, sorry. I made him out of Super Sculpey over a wire armature whilst listening to some unabridged H P Lovecraft audio books. I think the audio books are the key ingredient (smile). I'll try and take some WIP pictures of the next one I make.

Space Monkey Inactive Member17 Oct 2009 4:12 a.m. PST

I really like it… Big C looks almost benevolent… he's not angry or raging… just doing the laid back Buddha thing.

Warrenss2 Inactive Member17 Oct 2009 4:55 a.m. PST

Make a mold of it!!

Sell it!!!

I'd buy one in a stammering hearthbeat.

Make a mold of it!!

Sell it!!!

I'd buy one in a stammering hearthbeat.

I second that, I'd even think about buying two!

thebinmann Inactive Member17 Oct 2009 11:04 a.m. PST

Now why did you get all that talent and I got none?

Warrenss2 Inactive Member17 Oct 2009 11:28 a.m. PST

I love the suckers on the side of the head and the third eye.

huh? I'm losing sanity points every time I look at it!!! huh?

Please make one for Black Cat Bases to mold.

Hey, Black Cat Bases, since I voiced the idea first do I get a free one from you? grin
joking… kind of sort of…

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART17 Oct 2009 12:07 p.m. PST

Alxbates18 Oct 2009 2:23 p.m. PST

WOW! That looks fantastic!

I'd love to buy one if you had it cast up for sale!

Sparrowhawk Inactive Member18 Oct 2009 6:03 p.m. PST

Thanks for all the positive comments guys you've really inspired me.

All this talk about moulding, casting and people wanting to buy him has got me thinking. I've decided to sell this sculpture on eBay so that I can raise some of the funds to mould and cast a Cthulhu inspired chess set and board I'm working on. I was just making it for myself, but now I think others might want one as well.

I'll also sculpt another Big C like the one in the pictures above and see if I can get it cast. Because I don't think I could tackle something with the size and complexity of the Cthulhu I just sculpted.

Black Cat Bases Thanks for your generous offer. I'll contact you via the email address on your site and see if we can sort something out.

Thanks for the inspiration guys.

PS. I know I shouldn't talk about selling stuff on eBay here. I'm transferring some money to the bank account I use for paypal, I'll renew my membership as soon as the money clears. Then I'll make a proper announcement on the Market Place boards, with a link to the auction for anyone interested.

Fantastic work, Sparrowhawk! Glad to hear that you're A-OK now. Stay healthy, and thank you very much for sharing your work!

thumbs up

Sparrowhawk, great job!

I am constantly amazed on how different people can take the same bit of information and create a shared vision that is still unique to the artist.

Another example of a one off sculpt, also good yet quite different…really interesting the end results of projects like these.

Sparrowhawk Inactive Member20 Oct 2009 1:47 a.m. PST

That is a great looking Cthulhu 28mmMan. The tentacles remind me of curled up millipedes.

I love looking at other peoples Cthulhu inspired artwork. Like you I'm always amazed at how different they are, even though they share the same traits and come from a single description.

I put this down to HP Lovecraft doing what great horror writers do best, he left things to the imagination of the reader. So his descriptions were suitably ambiguous and contained just the right amount of information to convey the idea of the thing without over explaining it.

Love the paint job, and very well done.

That is simply amazing! Welcome back to the hobby.

Sparrowhawk Inactive Member23 Oct 2009 10:58 a.m. PST

Thanks guys.

He is up on eBay with just over two days to go. I renewed my TMP membership yesterday but Bill hasn't changed me from my basic membership yet. So I can't post on the market place at the moment.

Here is link for anyone interested.

I'll be using the money from selling this sculpture to buy rubber and resin for casting a Cthulhu inspired chess set and board that I'm working on.

Warrenss2 Inactive Member23 Feb 2012 4:52 a.m. PST

Any word on how this chess set is doing, Sparrowhawk?

Thieses Inactive Member23 Feb 2012 7:59 a.m. PST

This is a really outstanding piece. Really Nicely done.

As a Cthulhu master/player since 1983. The bes representation i've ever seen.

Congratulations, deep one.
