A co-worker brought in some single American Civil War and AWI figures, painted in a toy soldier style, about 25mm in height. The detail is a tad soft, but the figures are well proportioned. The bases are stamped "Union of South Africa." Does anyone know of a company which may have produced these.

HOLGER ERIKSSON 30mm model soldiers
This maker, who worked in 30mm, 40mm, 50mm, 54mm, 80mm and 90mm sizes, began his production in 1946 working for some of the earliest toy soldier makers, Authenticast and Swedish African Engineers
The SAE's are what you have they were sold painted in boxed sets and the range was vast including ww2 and even a papal guard set complete with pope and nuns. I used ww2 with my Dinky Toy vehicles for many years and I still have some of the old WW2 Authenticast figures.

Stan, thanks for that great reminder. I recall many fond days in my youth building roads and forts in my gravel driveway for my SAE soldiers and Dinky vehicles.

Indeed a vast range from ancients to post -WW2. 7 foot or 3 cavalry painted in a box for 75 cents. Also sold in large boxes for $5. USD Those go for $50 USD now. I have been unable to find any history of the firm or a full catalog, like are available for Britians and other 54mm figs. The company started in Ireland in the late 1940's/early 1950's but the factory burned down so they moved to South Africa. The Authenticast figs were 54m, much more animated than the typical toy soldier of that time, and solid cast.

A few years ago, i put together a large collection of SAE US Civil War figure to do an original style Featherstone game. These were used in the Wargames book. These figs show up every so often on eBay. At the time they were 30mm but now about the same as 28mm.

On my first trip at age 10 (1956) to Polk's hobby shop in Manhatten on the first floor the entire right hand side was devoted to military miniatures wargaming, collector figures, tin flats and toy soldiers.
The Authenticast I have are 20mm Americans and Russians.

Stan, thanks. I never went to Polks, but got their catalog and ordered by mail. I still have a couple of copies in my archive. I do not have the small Authenticast, only the 54mm Ericksons along with SAE's.

Others,
Here is a sample SAE ACW union officer, middle, left is 25mm (Foundry?) right is 28mm+ Copplestone. The SAE can fit with height but is very slight of build.
