Here's what the Sponk, the large native predator on my focus-world, Sepulveda VII, looks like.

picture

It is the dominant large carnivore on Sepulveda VII, other than in the Patelium clouds. However, its habitat is being encroached by Parasachnids that have gone feral after a probing attack by the Pelagic Dominate 50 years earlier, and it would be listed as an endangered species if the Genocidal Overlord, Her Beneficent Majesty Jellina Joel I, listed such things, which she does not.

That said, a sponk enjoys eating parasachnids, as it enjoys eating anything that comes near its sponk hole.

Sponks primarily prey on creatures that come near to their well-camouflaged holes, similar to this earth creature:

This had led to the following question being asked innumerable times on Sepulveda VII during foot patrols, by both the native insurgent forces as well as Jellina's oppressive Control Battalions:

"Where's Rodgers? Has anyone seen Rodgers?"

However, in the unlikely event that the prey gets away the Sponk does not hesitate to come out of its hole and hunt it down, especially if it senses that it wounded the prey. Sponks will also hunt free ranging after they have hunted-out the area around their existing sponk hole and need to relocate.

Sponks simply love to see other sponks because they readily consume each other and will immediately drop whatever they are doing to engage in a deathmatch, the winner often emerging with only one claw. The one exception is at mating time, when the female waits until after the male has done his duty before eating him.

The sponk is such a menace on Sepulveda that most Zodge 5000s have sponk detectors as part of the dealer installed package. (The Zodge 5000 is the nearly universal tracked pickup truck used on Sepulveda, sold under a sanctioned monopoly held by one of Jellina's manufacturing cronies.) Like most dealer added features on the Zodge 5000, the sponk detectors do not work.

INVID!

I like it already.

Except that it lives on Sepulveda, and I live very close to Sepulveda. *shudders*

It's a nice concept but to me the critter doesn't look very sponkish.

khurasanminiatures15 Oct 2009 9:21 p.m. PST

That's because you don't speak Sepulvedese! To a Sepulvedan this is exactly what sponkishness typifies.

Good idea -- the sponk loves to eat Danes with butter. evil grin

I used to live near Sepulveda, no more luckily!

At first I thought it was "Spork"…

I like it. Kind of reminds me of the Mirelurks from Fallout 3. I'd like to see a sentient version with a laser grafted to its carapace.

Gokiburi15 Oct 2009 10:44 p.m. PST

It's adorable, I'll name mine gary an' love him forever *heart*

Do you see what you've done Khurasan, your constant stream of delicious 15mm aliens has reduced me to the mind set of a little girl.

Also:
Is sponk an onomatopoeia and if so what sound does it represent?

A hasty conclusion… You can't know that at this point.

What a wonderful, and dangerous looking creature.

I used to catch their cousins in Chesapeake Bay, eons ago.

They are delicious when boiled, or steamed, and served with melted butter, and Old Bay Seasoning.

How soon 'til they will be available for sale?

looks like a hook horror/Ambul crossbreed.

khurasanminiatures16 Oct 2009 4:53 a.m. PST

It's sti just in the concept art stage, TGA. I catch its cousins in the Hudson River.

Will this ausländische Krebs grausigkeit be in a 15mm scale/size also?

And do you have a sculptor selected as of yet?

PS
As a thought, would you consider taking away from the humanoid midsection and legs by looking to the picture ? Perhaps reduce the section from hip to knee, add a second set of legs that mimic the first? As a second note how about the mid section…the small assist arms, I would offer that at least two more sets (close to the body for casting sake) going from mid belly as the picture shows and leading up to the mouth as extended maxila and labium?

khurasanminiatures16 Oct 2009 7:52 a.m. PST

It will be made for my 15mm line, but it's a crab bear, so frankly it will be usable in any scale. It will be about 28mm tall.

No sculptor yet, still considering who will make it.

JRacel16 Oct 2009 7:55 a.m. PST

When can I order it???? That is my only question . . . . .

Looking at the body design and the intent…maybe include the trap door on the creature itself?

With the carapace tines extending as far as they do it would be tough to move quickly without getting caught up, but if the creature was resting in a ready position with a build up of material to camo his back…quick move and pounce. Maybe closer to a picture or picture ?

MiniatureReview16 Oct 2009 9:06 a.m. PST

I love the look. Hopefully it can be sculpted like the artwork. If it can, you will definitely have a winner.

It does remind me a bit of the Griffin Miniatures Gravid, which in turn look sort of like the Invid from Robotech. Your artwork makes it look more crab like than robot (not a bad thing). You can count me in on a few of these.

28mm tall! Wow, that's a nasty brute, then. Great concept. I see a few in my future…gleefully munching on marines (with or without butter…yum).

khurasanminiatures16 Oct 2009 10:12 a.m. PST

Tom, not sure what a Gravid is. Have a link?

MiniatureReview16 Oct 2009 11:39 a.m. PST

Hi Jon,

Here it is. At one point I believe the Gravid were OOP, but they are back now.

link

I think your concept drawing works better with your current miniature lineup than the Gravid. They are more high tech looking to me.

Still I think both are welcome in my camp. Plus I like crabs… no not that kind. I used to have a saltwater aquarium. I had lots of crabs in there.
