Okay I'm in the process of looking for
a new set of rules for Ancients/Napoleonics
whatever period, you pick up that rulebook
on the shelf and the first section you turn to is?

I usually turn to the fire and or melee section,
looking to see if my d6's are being used and if
there are any, shutter, firefactor charts.

What does the playsheet look like

Pictors Studio12 Oct 2009 10:58 a.m. PST

I look at the pictures mostly.

svsavory12 Oct 2009 11:14 a.m. PST

I look to see the recommended basing, as I'm loathe to re-base my figures.

I look at the quick reference play sheet and try to determine if it is easy enough for my addled old brain to comprehend.

Overall concept of the game's design, and which dice are used.

rdjktjrfdj12 Oct 2009 11:39 a.m. PST

the approach to command

Goldwyrm12 Oct 2009 12:18 p.m. PST

Price is always first thing I check.

Then the Table of Contents, followed by the Fire/Movement Charts.

Caesar12 Oct 2009 12:46 p.m. PST

The price! Then the introduction, the charts and finally 'army lists'. After that, I put it down and come to TMP to see what others think of it.

Basing/Scales, turn sequence, then the QRS to see how many charts it takes to resolve things.

Basing, QRS (to include turn sequence), Any scenarios or OOB info

Dave Crowell12 Oct 2009 4:43 p.m. PST

Designer's Notes if any. These can tell loads about the game. Then QRS, followed by army lists (again if any). Basing and scales are both wildly exagerated in importance in the minds of most gamers (and game designers) I have yet to meet a set of rules that I can't make work with my already based figues.

Whatisitgood4atwork12 Oct 2009 9:36 p.m. PST

I don't think I've ever bought a rule book off a shelf. I browse and buy on the interweb, so look for feedback from other players first, along with info such as what size action it is trying to play, basing, and basic mechanisms.

Pictures…

I look for examples of play and designer's notes to hopefully gain some insight into the game mechanics and intent of the designer.

Pictures! (Ironically, given that DBA is still my favorite set of rules!)

Dashetal13 Oct 2009 5:20 p.m. PST

A well organized qrs.

If it is simultaneous or sequential play. Hate the latter.
