I dont want to go to the trouble expense of DIY/Alps

who did you use?
what size and type of artwork was needed?
can you get white printing on transparent decals done?

Timmo uk12 Oct 2009 6:54 a.m. PST

Yes I've used:

precisionlabels.com

Scroll down till you get to custom.

I supplied artwork as Hi-res PDF that I'd drawn in Adobe Illustrator (I use it professionally so this was't an issue for me). They will advise on the separations you need to create. It seems that everybody who uses Alps likes to set things up differently, some like over prints some don't etc etc. so you must follow their technical set-up to the letter.

And yes I had white decals on transparent film printed. The quality was very good indeed. Overall if you can create accurate enough artwork and can afford it the results are great however, if you send them a poor quality image and ask them to make decals from it expect a big, big bill as they'll have to make the artwork for you.

There are others out there who offer similar. I've tried one but quality was poor although they sent me masses of spares to make up for it ie they sent all their duff sheets. There's also an outfit in Oz that I was impressed by but don't have their details to hand.

Note not every colour can be matched.

ok a few questions..

what is separation? :)

any info on the oz mob would be great

Timmo uk12 Oct 2009 8:51 a.m. PST

Separation is essentially the layers. All different colours need to be on different layers – their info explains all of this though.

For the OZ one:

Brunel Models – Custom made decals to the right of the top level navigation on the site. they explain artwork requirements well.

Go to the Decals Express site … He pretty much can make you anything … I use it all the time …

I'm always interested in new suppliers for this kind of thing. I've looked at the site but there's no info on custom decal production.

So same sort of question – what's the artwork requirement, the prices and the quality?

I sent John Lerchey, the owner, this thread … So he should read this soon. The Quality is excellent ! I just send him a pic of the insignia, markings, etc. Price is great … But I'll let him talk about that … Here is an example of what I sent him and the results were excellent ! link

Cool – looking forward to his response. I've a project I've been holding off on starting due to lack of decals…

Legion 4,
Does Decal Express make the decal from a supplied image such as a scan from a book or do you need to make the image in photoshop and then they print it up?

He did the images from the pics in the book for me … AFAIK …

John can make decals from a scanned picture, photoshop and Illustrator. If it's in any other format, he'll have to let you now if it will work.

Oh… price will depend on the difficulty of the image. The standerd set of decals is 3x4 inches and retails for $4.00 USD

Thanks – that's incredible value. I might press on with my next projects and get a couple of jobs to him. Thanks.

Hi Folks. I'm "John" (BTW, Thanks L4 for the plug!).

Ok, so I can generally work from anything, but the cleaner the image, the better a job I can do. If you give me a bitmap of a complex item and all I can see is 8 "squares" of color, your results will not be good. OTOH, I reasonably large/detailed pic, yeah, I can work with it.

Some colors do not work well. Light grays, for example, kind of suck. :)

I undercoat all decals in white, unless they are going to go onto a white model. Then there is no need.

Let's see… what else, Don already stated that the general cost is around $4 USD per set. The company (Decals Express) does not advertise setup fees because it is extremely variable based on the complexity of the artwork and how much *work* it is for me to make the sheet.

Generally, if the sets are something that we can use elsewhere, or turn into a production set, we charge very little for setup. I can always provide an estimate based on the artwork and don't charge for that. :)

Ok, I'm tired of typing. I can be reached directly via a PM or by email to lerchey-at-gmail-dot-com.

Thanks!
