3 new minis are available for the dashing masked hero of Old California; A Reaper Chronoscape figure, Blue Moon's boxed set & the Boot Hill line. I'm intriqued by this genre since I much enjoyed the Disney series, the Douglas Fairbanks & Tyrone Power films & the 1924 novel. I also had the Marx Zorro Playset. I've already got a Spanish SW Colonial village & the Foundry Peons. The Boot Hill figures appeal to me most; IMO you should have mounted/dismounted versions of the stars & troopers to play a Zorro game. If I take inspiration from the Banderas/Zeta-Jones films I can go the VSF route. Have any of you already done a Zorro game or intend to do so? Got any thoughts on style of play, rules, compatible figures etc.? |

"My Daughter she learn that in school and she tell me, that is a 2." "It is not a 2, it is a Z! A Z for Zorro!" -- Sorry, after that movie I can't take Zorro seriously anymore. |

Although you could play Zorro with any rules, I really can't think of one that would be a perfect fit. I'd suggest something flexible like Gutshot, Blaze of Glory/Six-Gun Sound or TRWNN. Those are all skirmish games that allow for a lot of interpretation. And for the sake of total disclosure, I'm one of the authors of Gutshot (so yes, I'm biased). With any of these games, I would recommend giving Zorro a special power: The ability to decide whether he wants to inflict damage or whether a successful attack disarms someone. And if you chose to play Gutshot, I would consider using these stats for him (including a few abilities I'm making up on the spot): ZORRO TN: 6 Specialties: Disarming Attack, Horsemanship, Secret Identity, Two-blade Attack Disarming Attack: Before attacking, he decides if he wants to inflict injury or just wants to disarm his opponent. Horsemanship: Same as in book (+1 to attacks from horseback, mount as a fast task, etc.). Secret Identity: For some reason, all you need to do is put on a simple mask and no one recognizes you. Even your girlfriend and mother won't recognize your voice. Two-blade Attack: He may attack twice per Action, and may either focus his attack on one opponent, or split it between multiple foes. As I said, this is just off the top of my head. |

I think any of those could work with some tweaking. My local group has been talking about doing a Zorro games at our local convention this year. We have been thinking about using Gloire. |

Tom: I didn't think of Glorie. That should also work pretty well. |

That Reaper figure is a monster! makes Zorro look like a bully when he faces down regular 25mm foes. Great character, though. I'm dying to use him in a Wild West skirmish game someday. The movies needed some humor and light touches -- they're swashbucklers, not WATCHMEN! I enjoyed the gags myself. Made them more like Musketeers romps. |

Don't know about the others, but the Boot Hill Zorro is a joy to paint and his horse is magnificent. :) |

Have a go at Strange Grogge from Wessex. The rules are designed for piratical skirmishes with fantasy races but the transition to humans is simple enough. Designed for buckling swashes and all that. Savage Worlds ought to work well too as that game has all sorts of hokey combat maneuvers designed to dazzle your opponent. |

Oh, i forgot to add that the game we are thinking about running would be based on Zorro, The Gay Blade. I just hope we can get Zorros skins the right shade of tan. |

My two favorite Zorro flicks were the serial "Zorro's Fighting Legion" and the silent film "The Mark of Zorro" with Douglas Fairbanks. The stunts in both of those were great. |

All that's well and good but what about those of us who want to game the Mexican Spitfire films with Lupe Velez? |

Check out the Zorro minis at Boothill Miniatures. link They are very nicely done. Zorro comes on foot and mounted. There are also Mexican soldiers, Mexican cowboys, and since it is sort of based on the Disney TV series there is even a Sargent Garcia. They are basically in the same size range as Foundry minis. I'm thinking of using We Can be Heroes II. Don't forget. Zorro is often depicted using a bullwhip. |

I am using LOTOW with a few modifications. Lots of fame and fortune points plus fearsome reputation etc. The Presidial lancers are represented in the Alamo supplement as are Vaqueros so no need to come up with stats for them. I intend to add a tax collector set to my range over at Boot Hill Miniatures and also some Mexican civilians in suitable clothes, not pjamas and sandals will be forthcoming soon. |

Muchas gracias, Amigos. I'm appalled that I forgot The Gay Blade flick! Florinda: "Esteban only makes love to me 12 times in a year." Don Diego: "Well, once a month is not too bad." Florinda: "Not once a month; 12 times in one night, then zip, nothing for a year!" Esteban: "You know that thing that we do one night each year?" Florinda: "Yes, yes!" Esteban: "Tonight is not the night!" |
