I am really interested in trying this ruleset with my son at home, but I currently don't have room for a 4 foot square table.
Do you think there could be any advise against the choice of 6mm minis on 1" bases on a 4" squares grid?

Kelly Armstrong07 Oct 2009 4:11 a.m. PST

Shouldn't be anything to prevent you from using that scale. Could be quite appealing in that compact size.

I use individual figures in 15mm to mark casualties, I would suggest using a 3/4" printed marker or customized stand instead of individual figures in 6mm. . . .they may get lost in the terrain.

Our group plays it in 28mm on 12" squares so I don't think you will have a problem.

There would be no problems whatsoever playing PBI2 with 6mm figures. Base size is not important and does not affect game play so you can choose any base size you wish. Similarly, the only restriction on the size of the squares is how large your bases are and how many stands you need to get into one square. I reckon a 6mm game set for PBI2 could look totally awesome with decent numbers of buildings in the built up squares. Your proposed 4" squares ought to work just fine too. The only thing you will need to work out is how to show clearly what each stand is.

Kelly,
I wouldn't mind using any individual figures in 6mm, but possibly some 1" wide (or better 3/4") shrunken versions of the official 3-men bases.
Maybe adding a number or a colour-code into a corner, I think that any needed infos could be easily read with a glance.

Yes, determing if a stand is SMG or rifle armed or a commander could get tricky in 6mm. Small arms stands vs. MMG or Mortar should not be a problem. Color coding or some obvious basing scheme should solve that problem.

The game uses team/group sized elements on a grid, so 6mm figs on small bases would work fine, just as using 28mm figs on bigger bases would work.

The nice thing about grids is that table size becomes irrelevant, as long as you can fit the right number of bases inside your chosen grid dimensions.

For 6mm teams I base the figs in different formations so I can distinguish rifle (line) from SMG (diamond) from HQ (less figs) from support weapons (usually fairly obvious).

I use an extra clump foliage as well as the regular ground cover on the support weapon bases and group the figures in the command bases in the centre of the base. That's enough to tell me at a glance what is in each group of bases.

Thanks Martin, I think that 6mm PBI2 could even apply for a nice travel wargame. I already did this with HOTT and it was a success with my 10 y.o. son.

I carried the case with me on airplane and played HOTT even on the beach.

I might use some of the counters from my tactical boardgames to give PBI2 a go. No need for minis to take the rules for a test drive.

nazrat07 Oct 2009 10:49 a.m. PST

That's pretty much true with any miniatures game, isn't it?

coopman08 Oct 2009 5:27 a.m. PST

Sure, but what I was specifically refering to was their substitution for the 6mm scale minis on the PBI2 square grid is not too far from being "actual size". I am thinking of my "Panzer Grenadier" (by Avalanche Press) game counters or some ASL counters.

I have always used 6mm to play PBI (not that I play it much anymore – moved to IABSM). I just used 3-4 figs on the same 30mm square bases on the same 6" grid as 15mm. No changes necessary.

I was first introduced to it in 10mm – on the same 30mm / 6" grid, that worked fine too.

Part of the appeal of the 6" grid is that it really doesn't matter what scale of figures you use, although once you're using 15mm and upwards I find the grid causes terrain to be too representational rtaher than realistic, can be solved easily enough by increasing teh grid size though.

As a special favour I have converted the counters I have to PDFs, and posted on my blog- done in response to this post.

I use 10mm for my eastern front. I have a 1:1 figure scale, on the 15mm bases, and with a couple of tanks comes in at about £20.00 GBP a company. They look better I feel, because there is more room between figures- a 30mm base is 12 feet for 15mm, but 18ft for 10's.
