My mate Nick has done a splendid paint job on some of the relatively new Polemarch Thureophoroi:-

Nice job – agree with you about the original shields. They do look a little odd.

The GB Unit Deals are OK and I do like the fact that the figures are 'crisp', do not need much cleaning up and paint up very well.

Good to have mates like this!

I've added a post showing the five completed units of my projected Hellenistic army…

Very nice indeed. I like the big images to see where you apply the brush.

Simon

They look good in their units. I like the idea of distinguishing standards – would be ideal for a campaign.

Timing for Hellenistic armies is spot on.

Apart from others, Aventine will soon release troops for the army of Pyrrhos. If their Elephants and Italian figures are anything to go by they will be hard to avoid…….should cover off Companions, Tarentines as well as phalangites.

Indeed Mithridates.

Re Aventine, I have also heard tales of cataphracts coming along at some stage… which would suit me very nicely as one of the reasons I've painted all the Thureophoroi is in order to provide Pontic foes for my Marian/Sullan Romans. I'm also very hopeful about their African elephant.

very nice…are they based in 3 elements..isthat due to C&C ancients auxilia being 3 blocks?

Hi ThorLingus,

No, it's complicated. C&C Ancients Auxilia are in 4's…

However all my units are in multiples of 3 elements, as you have observed; this is because I plan, at some (unspecified) point in the future, to write a grid-based rule system based on units of 6 elements (typically 24 heavy infantry, 10-12 light infantry or 12 or 18 cavalry). I find the 3-element frontage units aesthetically pleasing because the command stand is in the middle.

Cheers, Simon
