As I am unable to find the post thread that included a complaint about the time needed and the trouble involved with cut-and-paste creation of FT SSDs, I'm asking my own question; Is this a big turn off for players of other gmaes? It has been mentioned that ASfoS and Starmada apparently have generators available on the web/for download to print up SSDs and I've seen them available as PDFS for MKP ships for their game . . . but is this a huge reason to turn to these games as oppose to FT? Just curious. Any thoughts? |

There are some images available on the net, for you to download, cut, and paste. Can't recall where though. |

Aware of Dean's items, TGA – was really interested in the idea of a generator like those of the other systems for homebuilt ships that draw out the SSD for you; at least, i got the impression from the other thread that that was what was so attractive about those games *over* FT. |

roger burton west has the definitive cross platform gui tool for FT ship design and SSD creation. its called shiptools. its at: link support on its use can be found at the yahoo fullthrust group. if you want bits you can cut and paste.. the full thrust computer core is what you want. link |

I have not found the cut and paste approach to be too time consuming. So, no, for me it is not a turn off. It is quite easy to just have two copies of "paint" open – one with FTBITS or similar and one with the ship you are building. It only takes a few minutes to cut and paste what is needed and they can be arranged in any way you desire, to make the SSD look good. |

Thanks for the input – Was hoping to hear from the guy who made the negative comment for a *particular* reason, but theat may not happen. It would have been useful to everyone. tmason, that's the way I do it; Clearly your MS skills are better than mine as I find a three hour games takes about four hours prep time :) |

bobblanchett, yes, I actually have downloaded that . . . cannot get the SSD part to run though, something about a 'unrecognised command' error. |

I have never timed how long it takes to generate a SSD. It probably does take me a couple of hours, but that includes designing the ships in the first place (I have a spreadsheet that does most of the arithmetic) and I tend to do a whole fleet etc at one time when I buy the models. Deigning the ship can take anything from a few minutes to hours depending on how many options I want to explore. Once I have settled on the ship capabilities, I can "draw" a SSD in less than 10 minutes. When I buy a new fleet, I might spend hours – often days off and on – designing the ships etc, but I tend to stick with the ship designs once I have done them. As far as prep time goes, quite a few of my games (not just FT but anything) take a couple of hours (at least) prep time as I usually print out orbats, mission orders, quick ref sheets etc. But maybe that's just me

I have a design/SSD program for version one (the 4 arc version). I mention just on the offchance that you are playing this one. |

Cwalrus: its needs activestate perl installed.. any hassles beyond that and I know RBW inhbits the yahoo fullthrust group ad is happy to help out. |

Long ago when work NAZI computer watching wasn't in such force I created a set of symbols for creating SSD's in word using many a lunch hour. Thankfully I was able to transfer them to my home computer so I still use them to this day. There is a knack to using them, but everyone has word so in that regard they are not bad. I've created all of the standard ships from Fleet Book II in word so that I have them stored by nationality so that I can cut and paste them into my fleet templates. Carl Scheu Star Mats Plus |

Oh thank god
I thought the thread said STD's
morbid curiosity drew me in. |

Full Thrust Java Applet (http://osmirrors.cerias.purdue.edu/pub/FreeBSD/distfiles/ftjava/faq.html) has a design utility. After designing and laying out the SSD they you can take a screen shot, crop the resulting image and print them as you like. I've used this applets SSDs to layout the NSL & FSE from Fleet Book 1 in a playing card format, which are sleeve and can then be marked up. Layout a card sized object in your word processor, fill that obect with the captured image. You can see them here: link |

Interesting, Aron, I might give that a try . . . |
