Does anyone know where there is a reliable OB for this battle? I've searched all the main sites that I know of and can find casulaty lists but not the actual strength of units engaged! Any help would be appreciated. |

OOB is easy. Total Casualties is easy but regimental strength and losses will take some digging. USA: link CSA: link |

Didn't SPI make a TSS style game of this? Or was that Cedar Mountain? |

I would start with Battles and Leaders, then the Stackpole book and next try Lee's Lieutenant's. If you come up with nothing from these then
the Time/Life book might have something perhaps. |

Jrbatso, Good link. Check the link on the References for more info from the Offical Histories. |

The standard reference, which may have the regimental strengths, is The Official Records of the War of the Rebellion. Also check Robert Krick's "Conquering the Valley" and Robert Tanner's "Stonewall in the Valley" (2nd Edition). |

A better book to read on the Battle is Stonewall Jackson by Dr. James "Bud" Robertson. Dr. Robertson teaches at Virginia Tech and is the number one authority on the Valley Campaign and Stonewall Jackson. Another great source of info is General Jackson's Shenendoah Campaign by Gary Cockrell and Tony Sestito, publish by American Eagle Games. It does list regimental strenghts for each battle of that campaign.I have a copy. The Wiki link for the OOB for Cross Keys is wrong. |

Thanks for the help though I couldnt find anything from official records online other than – as I say – casualties. I've done a search for the book you mentioned rebel222 but can't even find American Eagle Games or the authors let alone the book you mention. I'm guessing it wasn't a best seller – shame as it sounds like exactly what I was after! Thanks anyway |

From Jrbatso's link. It you didn't already do it, check the link on the References at the bottom of the page for more info from the Offical Histories. It has lots on orginal battle reports with some unit strengths. link |

Sometimes you can put together an OB with regimental strengths by going through the reports in the OR. Brigadiers and regimental commanders will sometimes state how many men were present when giving the number of casualties. Not everyone does this, and not everyone files a report, so you usually have to come up with an estimate for other regiments. I do this (and dig in other resources) for every scenario we design for Regimental Fire and Fury, but I enjoy it. I realize it resembles work or a college assignment to most people. Mark |
