I swear we had a Travel board at one time but I can't seem to find it .. At any rate, the Napoleon bug has got me just in time for a December trip to Paris for 4 days in December. The Musee de L'Armee is in the itinerary, as is Napoleon's Tomb ..what else is a must-see for the Napoleonic enthusiast in terms of museums but also hobby shops, prints or anything of military interest. Any dedicated military bookstores or that kind of thing? Do they have something like a Borders or anything? |

I was last in Paris in 2001 and both Musee de l'Armee and Invalides should be at the top of your list. I had to visit Musee de L'Armee on two different days because not all exhibits were open on my first visit. The museum has a very good book store as well. I also stumbled upon the museum (Chateau?) in Rueil-Malmaison. On the second floor is a room filled with display cases of Napoleonic miniatures. Since fighting during the FPW occurred nearby, there are FPW displays including some famous battlefield paintings. Versailles also contains a number of Napoleonic paintings as well. I also recall a miniatures shop near the Louvre. This should get you started. Jon |

I was there last year for a quick visit of the same nature. The Arc the triomphe is (not so surprisingly) very interesting. It's got the statue of the unknown soldier in the upper part and sculptures from all kinds of battles. |

The cemeteries of Paris hold the tombs of several of Napoleon's officers. If you don't find that too outré. Davout, St Cyr and Kellerman, among others, are interred in Pere Lachaise Jomini and Lannes' tombs are in Cemeterie Montmarte link |

If you are going in early December, it's probably a good idea to plan your visit to the Musée de l'Armée to coincide with the festivities for St. Barbara's day. A few years ago I ran into these quite by accident, and was delighted to see a nine-pounder and a soixante-quinze in horse draught being driven, unlimbered and fired. All the best, John. |

Recently the napoleonic galleris at the army museum were closed for reconstruction. I don't know whether they have reopened yet. There are 2 great bookstores: histoire & collections at 5 avenue de la republique (metro: place de la republique). Les livres chez vous: 25 rue Barges. Both of those stores have websites. The column in place vendome is also interesting. You can read about it here: link |

I'll be there next month. I should get by the Army Museum. I'll try to remember to post whether the napoleon gallery is open now. |

About the Arc de Triomphe, you can of course see it from below but don't forget that you can also visit the museum inside and have a wonderful sight aover the Champs-Elysées from the top. The entrance may be a bit hard to find since it is not near the AdT, but near the top of the Champs-Elysées avenue. |

I'll be there next month. I should get by the Army Museum. I'll try to remember to post whether the napoleon gallery is open now. I didn't bother looking last week. It's been closed for years, I didn't expect to be any luckier than on my previous visits. Our French cousins really know the meaning of 'slippage' on a project

Anybody have any word on whether the Napoleonic galleries are open, or whether they will be by late March when I go? Thanks, Phil |
