Well we've had best line, favorite villain, best historical character, and best movie so what is your favorite/the best western theme? I would say the Fistful theme but anything by Ennio Morricone. That or Do Not Forsake me from High Noon.

Grand Duke Natokina20 Sep 2009 6:40 p.m. PST

How about the Magnificent Seven?
Or The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.

The Major Dundee theme.

Quigley Down Under captures it for me.

The theme from the Professionals is my favorite.

Nothing comes close to Count Basie and his Orchestra:

I'm with John Izbrand (everyone's citing Quigley this week before I get a chance to!); and I like:

…better than:

…but both have their connection to different parts of the film.

You have to like the "Old 1812", too:

John,

I agree, anything from Ennio Morricone but here's a few other themes I enjoy:

"The Forgotten Pistolero"

"Blue" (which was composed by Manos Hadjidakis and starred Terence Stamp and Ricardo Montalban)

"The Proud & The Damned" (I liked the ending credits theme. This starred Chuck Connors & Aron Kincaid)

The theme song from Bonanza has great guitar, but it needs a little more cowbell.

The Big Country is pretty good too.

But I guess that I will vote for The Magnificent Seven, by a whisker over Bonanza.

How about the haunting song from The Searchers?

I'm also a big fan of some that have already been mentioned: The Big Country, Quigly Down Under & Magnificent Seven.

My favorite Morricone is Two Mules for Sister Sara:

Good Thread!

'Dances with Wolves' & 'Silverado' have great scores with a real old-fashioned epic feel.

'The Big Country' & 'Magnificent Seven' are both pure genius.

Favourite Morricone piece has to be 'The Ecstasy of Gold' from TGTB&TU… jaw-dropping!

Here's a couple for you….

An overlooked minor classic:

And for pure cheese value, who could resist:

The Magnificent Seven YouTube link with Silverado YouTube link a close second.

The Hallelujah Trail YouTube link isn't bad either. The movie itself just screams out 'convention game.'

Pentaro21 Sep 2009 5:08 a.m. PST

"The Ecstasy of Gold" of course!

Plus the catchiest theme ever

Great thread, I'll listen to all of them at home :)

So many GOOD choices already listed…

but I'd have to go for 'The Magnificent Seven', but my phone 'ring' is 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly!'….

But themes from other tv shows and movies mentioned and a few NOT, would also be great!

A 'suggestion' if I might? I know that I've collected a lot of 'soundtrack' albums…both from individual movies and 'themed' collections…(sci-fi, James Bond, John Williams, Milklos Rosa (Ben Hur, King of Kings etc)).

So, try checking out Amazon and local record specialty places for 'collections' by specific themes…or composers…(Jamer Horner did stuff for trek of course and other sci-fi and had 'common theme/music elements')…

I've collected ALL of the Halo soundtracs, (so far) except for Halo:ODST due out after Tuesday!…but you get the point.

Not only are 'Collection' albums (with a variety of movie/tv show soundtracks), more common, but are just plain 'fun/good listening' and bring back a LOT of 'good memories'….(Bonanza, Gunsmoke, Wild, Wild West, the Big Valley, The High Chapperal, Have Gun Will Travel, Maverick, The Rifleman, Wanted: Dead or Alive, Wagon Train, Rawhide or even 'Sons of the Pioneers!' to name a few…and a lot of those 'John Wayne/Howard Hawks films'…McKenna's Gold…
most of the 'Man with No-Name' Clint Eastwood stuff, (loved Two Mules for Sister Sara!), High Noon (more than one remake), Lonesome Dove….even True Grit/Rooster Cogburn?

You want a REAL 'musical'….how about 'Paint your Wagon!'

and the hits just keep on coming!!!

Point is, if you want good 'background music'…collections of different themes from movie/tv can be great 'fodder'…but can also 'distract' from the game too, but like snibbleys, kibbitzing and a little bit of rules-lawyering….isn't that part of the whole 'gaming' experience??? (to immerse yourself???? 8-)

Slishfully and BLISSFULLY…
Sgt DWW-btod…(good music NEVER is a 'waste' of time or money or memories! 8-)

Sloppypainter21 Sep 2009 6:08 a.m. PST

Siverado…great score.

jpattern221 Sep 2009 7:53 a.m. PST

Lots of great suggestions so far (Morricone is a personal favorite), but I can't believe no one has mentioned an unassuming little tune called "The William Tell Overture": YouTube link

My two favorites are the opening themes for "The Magnificent 7" and "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly"

…but you *MUST* hear this from Sergio Corbucci's "Companeros".

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the theme from "The Rifleman"--a personal favorite, but one I think most would enjoy.

But there's also the them from "The Comancheros"--hard to beat that one!

Notice, though, that most any western theme by the late great Elmer Bernstein is pure magic.

But if I had to hear only one theme for all Western purposes, it would have to come down to between "The Big Country" and "The Magnificent Seven."

The Rifleman has probably one of the best openings ever for TV show. They play a few bars of the tune, and then "Blam, Blam,Blam, Blan" (close up shot of smoking rifle), then cue the rest of the music.

When it comes to TV, I'd choose the "Have Gun, Will Travel" and "Maverick" themes, but even though "26 Men" is much less well known it's also a great theme. I didn't care much for "The Rebel", but the theme, sung by Johnny Cash" is good and one of the best known.

WOW! There's a fossil here older than ME!

"26 Men"--I still remember most of the lyrics, and it was a gritty, grim little gem. A show about Arizona Vigilantes as the turn of the century. More power to you, The Shadow!

Occurs to me I could provide the links to "The Big Country," and "The Rifleman" so the KIDS out there could hear some truly neat stuff.

But another personal favorite is the theme from the 1959 version of "Gunfight At OK Corral," written by Dmitri Tiomkin (the Ukrainian who MADE movie Western Music!) and sung by the absolutely unique Frankie Laine.

It's pretty specific to subject, but what a Western theme!

Brothers, this thread has made me dreadfully nostalgic.

Not vigilantes. Like their Texas counterparts, the Arizona Rangers were official law enforcement personnel. Great theme, though …

"This is the story of 26 men
who rode the Arizona territory."

Right up there with "Have Gun, Will Travel".

Yes just got Wanted Dead or Alive and we all like the music. Also Rawhide was good. The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly makes a good ringtone. It is the one I use on my phone which doubles as my alarm clock so every week morning:
Wa Wa Wa

Still like "Fistful"'s theme best after thinking about it. Something about that whistling… One thing that irritated me was I couldn't find a music track with the whistling. Hugh Montenegro and others replaced it with flute or some other instrument. The closest I could find was a track on an Ennio Morricone collection cd. Not human whistling but close. Sigh.

And then ther's always:

Heh! Probably. (-:

Not many people know about the Arizona Rangers, which were like the Texas Rangers only (duh) in Arizona. (-:

Tris Coffin starred on the show. He previously played Jeff King in the serial "King of the Rocket Men"

"Still like "Fistful"'s theme best after thinking about it".

Since FFOD was the first "Spaghetti Western" that most of us ever saw, and probably the first time any of us had ever heard anything by Morricone, there's good reason to pick that over the theme from TGTBATU. I think it's great. So is the theme from "For a Few Dollars More".
