What format of base is best for 28mm to 1/48 wargaming figures? circle or square?

Grumpy Monkey16 Sep 2009 11:18 a.m. PST

Circles, Fender Washers are cheap

Depends on the intended use. I like square bases for figures that will spend most of their table time in formed-up units, and rounds for the ones who don't.

(Having said that, I've started putting even my close order guys on round bases so that I don't have as many headaches trying to rank them up.)

For units I like square / rectangular bases, multiple based looks good and better represents a unifom deploymnet.

For skirmish I like circular, as it better represents an individuals reach.

I go back and forth on this.

Right now I'll say squares. It allows you to clearly define the front, flank and rear of the fig. Also allows you to form them up into a unit easier.

I'm split. I have used both square and round bases. Now, I will not use both square and round for the same project/period. For some reason I like to use round bases on stuff for roleplaying games.

I prefer round bases, but also use rectangles for things like horses, bikes and chariots.

What is a fender washer?I know what a washer is an aluminium circle with a hole in the center?

The Game Crafter16 Sep 2009 6:07 p.m. PST

Round bases 12 sizes standard and metric gamecraftersltd.com better than washers thinner, galvinised steel not stainless and No Hole!

I use square for Dark Ages & Fantasy, round for everything else.

I go by what the rules say for the game I intend to play with them.

GreatScot7216 Sep 2009 10:16 p.m. PST

Round for everything here.

What is a fender washer?

It's a washer, but it's flat. And generally the center hole is smaller.

That's also what I use.

And would you guys mind figures with pegs instead of the slot sistem???

Timmo uk18 Sep 2009 9:51 a.m. PST

As above – squares/rectangles for anything formed and circles for everything else. I'm happy to mix both in an army – typically this will mean command are on circles while units aren't.

Squares with clipped corners for me.
Look better than squares, but can still form up, unlike circles.
Easy to make form mounting card.

Fantastic idea Dexter thanks!
Where can I buy those?

Dexter Ward22 Sep 2009 3:17 a.m. PST

You don't need to buy them – just cut mounting card into squares or rectangles (I use 20mm square for 28mm foot, and 20x40mm for mounted), then clip the corners with a pair of nail clippers.
It only takes a few seconds; I don't know why you'd want to buy something that is so quick to make.

GOTHIC LINE MINIATURES22 Sep 2009 2:37 p.m. PST

It is simple I would like to buy lots of them to include bases in my figure blisters!
As my soldiers will have pegs on their feet instead of rectangle slots or small useless bases,I would like to offer bases to my clients that is all, considering most of us do not have time or skill to do bases.
What period do you wargame in have you seen my figures on the blog?
Regards
Gui
