OK so I go gaming in Leeds, but a club in my home city would be a natural choice, if such a thing existed! Was there ever such a thing, and if so what became of it. Any other frustrated gamers in the Bradford region, or do you all also go to other locales

"Why is there no club in Bradford, UK?" Probably for the same reason there is no club in many other English towns. This hobby isn't really that popular you know (although we would all like to think it is!). |
| Jubilation T Cornpone | 15 Sep 2009 5:04 a.m. PST |
True. You would think there would be a well established club in most big cities but there aint! I'd love a club in Wakefield but it's not there. Waits patiently for the 'Well form one yourself if it's not there!?!' It's a point I suppose

The obvious answer really is – because you haven't started one yet. |

Don't give up hope, wargamers will suddenly crawl in from the woodwork! When I moved to the South Somerset area near Yeovil I put out feelers including on here asking for wargamers in the Yeovil area. No luck, except an invitation to go to Weymouth. A few years later the South Somerset Wargames Group have about 20 members, meet every 2 weeks for evening games + weekend games, with an average of 16 attending! Tally Ho! |

I would try the university. When I ook my daughter around last year during an open day hey had a big demo game near the libray (SU buildings) but very few people had turned up. Two reasons in my book – no notices anywhere to be seen and running the open day the Saturday as the Derby show kinda killed it Give my daughter a week or so and I'll get her ask as she has a place there this year. Jubilation, at least two of the members of my club are from Wakey, so maybe it's just a case of people finding it easier to travel to the nearest existing club rather than starting their own. Pat |

Nick, None in the Yeovil area? There used to be a very well-established group in that neck of the woods with John Tuckey at the helm. Aren't they around any more? |
| nickinsomerset | 15 Sep 2009 6:54 a.m. PST |
RMD, no sign of them, I often pass the Marston Magna Village Hall and remember the annual articles on the show there! I heard that JT had sold off his stuff and was doing model railways or similar. We now have a well established club meeting in a good pub with our own web stuff! Tally Ho! |

Is Bradford really that far away from Leeds, anyway? I have two fond memories of Bradford – the most sensational curry I have ever had in my life, and the fact that one of my father's best friends came from there. |

I thought there was a club in Wakey, the wakefield and ossett club or somesuch? Surprised theres not a club in Bradford given there's 3 clubs in Leeds I know about. |

The pub idea sounds like a good one

We did used to have one, but we all moved away. Wargaming and curry was always kind of pretty near perfect really. I'd certainly support such an idea if you did the hard work

Nick, That's a real shame. Marston Magna was one of those great little shows. TINY but brilliant! I lost touch with John a few years back, but he was just getting into model railways then. I was invited up to his Christmas game a couple of times (always epic), but marriage put a stop to that! A real shame if he's moved on fom the hobby – I've never known anyone else with such a vast collection. |

R Mark, we had planned to put on a show in Yeovil but are going to start with a large space at the SWME show at Shepton Mallet, I suspect that Marston Magna is now a little small, in fact I recall the last write up JT was intending to move the show to Wincanton! Tally Ho! |
| Jemima Fawr | 16 Sep 2009 2:49 a.m. PST |
Nick, Yes he was. I forget the details, but the Wincanton deal fell through at the last minute due to the hall owners throwing spanners in the works and he had to cancel the show at last minute. I lost touch with John after that. Mark |

Used a be a club at the University (I started it and it was still going a few years ago – or, at least a club was still going a few years ago. Try the Halifax mob – if there is a club in Bradford, chances are they will know about it. |

Sane Max, which club are you with? Yes, I have heard of the Wakefield and Ossett wargamers but I wasn't sure where in the fair county they hailed from (okay, clue is in the name I suppose but it covers a lot of ground!). Also, their display games at various shows have never filled me with confidence

Well I wasn't thinking about setting my own up; not just now anyway, I have far too much on! Still as it seems there is nothing around, maybe one day I will get a Braford club going

yes I have. There are no dark satanic mills there |

As an ignorant American, I had no idea where Bradford or Leeds were before I read this thread, and when I looked them up, found that they are only 8.6 miles apart! In the U.S. some places you'd be lucky to find a club within 100 miles. I just find it funny, that's all

I've been to Bradford and a wargames club would not be top of its "needs" list. |

Can't you just look at the window at various riots, race related or otherwise in Bradford and each pick a 'team/army/side' from that and yell out instructions? ;-p |

Joining the thread pretty late, since I only recently found it. I've just moved away from Bradford after five years so I'm pretty clued up as to the wargaming aspects of the city, and in simple terms there ain't much! Wargames World in Ilkley (part of Bradford District) closed and there are no other wargames shops around. There's a tiny Games Workshop – three 4x4 tables and hordes of teenagers – but no formal club or group. There is a small wargames cabal associated with the Bradford University Role-Playing Society (BURPS) at rpgmp3.com/burpsforum/index.php but they've been quiet of late. They're talking about starting a more regular gathering but thus far it's only talk. Leeds has at least two flourishing groups, and the Wakefield and Osset guys do great work, but both are a bit of a trek on a weekday evening. It was interesting to read about the Univerity open day game (@ Andrew Beasley). I was the one hosting that event – the Battle for Gondor series of games, using GW's Lord of the Rings rules. It was nothing to do with the uni or BURPS; rather I was using my membership of BURPS to bag a large space for five simultaneous games! It was just a coincidence that the uni held an open day on the same day, and the clash with Derby was equally unavoidable. It was aimed at the LOTR crowd, hence not much advertising more widely than the specialist websites, but attendance was still disappointing – many were interested but few bothered in the end. I suspect many games hosts will empathise! |

West of Leeds, there appears to be a 'wargaming desert'. There used to be a club in Halifax, but that died some years ago. I am based near Hebden Bridge, and play ECW, British and French Colonial, SYW and am wondering about Second World War (Anything but FOW). My usual partner is based in East Lancs ( we vary games between 'bases'), so there is a lot of solo wargaming – or,playing with ones-self. We do have some good games – see MI JUNE(Warrior Bazaar – Wargamers Against Salad). I did try a club in Huddersfield, but it was plain that they did not want any new members. If interested PM me Bill If interested |

There is still a show at Pudsey Civic Hall
..called Recon and it's run by the Ossett group. It's usually first Saturday in December. Which is good and bad for me; it's walking distance (as I live in Pudsey) but on a Saturday which means I'm almost certainly attending an RL game. |
