To those in the know:
I am looking to order a troop or two of British Matilda I tanks (Mk I Infantry Tank). I have not been able to find a model that does not remind me of a piece of molten metal which has cooled! Does anyone out there know of a Matilda I model in 15 mm which is well cast and detailed? I know it was an eye-sore and is arguably the ugliest tank of the war, but it was an important component of the B.E.F. in 1939 – 1940.
Thank-you in advance for your time and attention.
Rod Robertson.

Rod,

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I have personally always been a fan of the Mathilda 1. ;^)

The Peter Pig ones are beautiful Rod – we have a couple of them for our early war projects and for use in North Africa in 1941. They assemble very nicely, have minimal mold lines and are fairly clean from what I recall.

Did any of the A11 Matilda I's make it to North Africa?

Not that that would ever stop me from using some in a scenario, though. I'm still working on my "Polish forces storm through to Berlin 1939" scenarios.

No Matilda I's made it to North Africa. Their only combat use was in France

Another vote for Peter Pig, they comprise my entire force of Matilda 1s (in fact, I think they are the only manufacturer).

As jd says, they were only ever used in France, plus home defence of the UK.

I've got some and can also confirm that they are lovely models.

I have a bunch of Matilda I's that were made by battlefront back in the day. Of course I paid about $5.50 USD for them, if that tells you how long ago it was. They are very nice models.

The only Matilda I currently available is the Peter Pig one which does look a little blobby in their picture. The BF one is long out of production but you might find them on ebay etc.

I have two Matilda 1's that I purchased second hand at a convention flea market several years ago. I dont even know what brand they are, but they are lovely little models. My regret has always been that its so hard to find any use for them. Its France 1940 or nothing.

The Matilda 1 was nick named 'The Duck'. That was really short for 'The ruptured Duck', the name given to it by the crews when they first saw one. Tank crews that served or trained on them apparently had a very affectionate feeling for them.
