This is great news, I have resisted buying anybody else's Bengal lancers for many years. Now it pays off !

No photos yet, that is disappointing.

Wonder if they would match the Foundry ones that I am just now painting up.

They point out these would also work for the Northwest Frontier. Any idea from when to when?

Probably circa the Second Afghan War, which is where the rest of the range (sort of) matches.

Hard to say without the pictures but if you aren't too anal about detail you could probably use them through to the Mohmand expedition.

By the way the Castaway Arts versions should be a reasonable match and they are lovely figures.

In Egypt in 1882, did all 3 Bengal Cavalry regiments wear khaki? I have found some references to suggest the 13th wore dark green. Does anyone have definitive uniform details?

Flight Sergeant Reggie31 Aug 2011 6:42 a.m. PST

Sorry. I meant dark blue for the 13th Bengal.

There is a contemporary photo of the 13th from 1886 in the old Osprey Bengal Cavalry book, taken at the "Delhi Camp of Exercise," showing a lone lancer dressed in his blue kurta, together with the rest of his troop, who are all dressed in khaki kurtas. There are some other pics of sowars and Indian officers of the 13th in the book, wearing the blue kurta, but all are in formal "dress uniform" type settings (they certainly wore blue when they weren't in khaki).

There is also what I believe to be the most famous image suggesting they may have worn blue in Egypt, which is a well-known R. Caton Woodville sketch from the Illustrated London News of 30 September 1882. At first the 2 lancers in the foreground of this drawing may appear to be wearing dark tunics, but upon closer inspection I believe they are simply "in shadow", probably from clouds overhead. I'm pretty sure the "dark" shade of their tunics is a matter of lighting, not uniform color.

…just found another Caton Woodville sketch, in the Osprey Tel el-Kebir Campaign book, of the 13th charging the Egyptian rear, and I believe it's clear that the lead sowar is wearing khaki tunic and khaki pants, with dark (blue or black) puttees.

Not as good as a written description of their uniforms specifically in Egypt, or contemporary photos from Egypt, or contemporary color artwork, but all signs point towards khaki. Maybe someone else has access to more conclusive source material.
