How offended would you be if someone on the TMP forums called you a yobbo?

According to this online dictionary – thefreedictionary.com/yob – yob or yobbo are British slang for "A rowdy, aggressive, or violent young man"

fairoaks02407 Sep 2009 1:41 p.m. PST

not particularly bothered, it's quite a mild term of abuse

regards

jim

Phil Walling07 Sep 2009 2:06 p.m. PST

Probably laugh…

John the Confused07 Sep 2009 2:10 p.m. PST

I just might live up to the definition.

Angel Barracks07 Sep 2009 2:12 p.m. PST

yobbo or indeed yob is not that much of a big deal, yob possibly a bit harsher than yobbo. A granny saying yobbo is quite ok.

shelldrake07 Sep 2009 2:13 p.m. PST

yobbo is also used frequently by Aussies – as one I have no problem should I be called one on the forum, simply because it would be used out of context, unless I made a post telling people how violent and rowdy I was, and it would make the person calling me a Yobbo look like a dag wink

If you are going to look through sources for words that people shouldn't call others you will have a great time looking up all the different words the Aussies have.

Maybe instead of looking up all the different words that could offend people that a rule is brought in: if you don't have anything good to say, don't say it at all.

Plynkes07 Sep 2009 2:33 p.m. PST

Oh please. Hasn't the TMP Nanny State gone far enough? Now you're actually actively searching for things to be offended by?

Yobbo isn't swearing, and is fairly analogous with the words 'hooligan' or 'thug.' Whether or not one is offended by being so labelled I guess entirely depends upon whether one is one or not. Yobs tend to wear their yobbishness as a badge of pride.

Cold Steel07 Sep 2009 2:47 p.m. PST

In Korea, it is a slang endearment one calls your spouse. I guess the Better Half would be offended if someone called me that.

Connard Sage07 Sep 2009 3:04 p.m. PST

If we're going to start banning annoying words, can we get rid of bloody 'boyo', so beloved of some on here?*

Call me a yob, a yahoo, or a Bleeped text, I don't mind, but boyo really gets up my nose :)

*namely a certain artillery officer, and a…well nothing was proved.

Cyrus the Great07 Sep 2009 3:15 p.m. PST

Dag, a term known to anybody who possesses the Australian source book for Call of Cthulhu.

"Oh please. Hasn't the TMP Nanny State gone far enough?"

As the TMP FAQ simply and clearly states "No name calling," one would think that would be enough, you Pithecanthropus!

Waco Joe07 Sep 2009 3:18 p.m. PST

Why don't you just ban every word on this list: rsdb.org

Ed Mohrmann07 Sep 2009 3:51 p.m. PST

So, apparently, 'hayseed', 'hick', 'rube', 'bumpkin',
'styfoot' and similar terms used to refer to country
folk (unsophisticates, in many eyes) would be banned
if used to cast aspersions upon the sophistication
level of another with whom was engaged in debate ????

mad monkey 107 Sep 2009 4:33 p.m. PST

I thought it was a obscure term for a sub-speicies of Hobbit.

Personal logo John the OFM Supporting Member of TMP07 Sep 2009 4:58 p.m. PST

Bill, will you PLEASE just stop asking our permission via polls, and just rule the damn place? As Geoprge III's mom said, "George, be a king."

Quit asking for permission and quit asking our opinion,. Just do it.

StarfuryXL507 Sep 2009 5:10 p.m. PST

Better than being called a "gobbo."

Space Monkey07 Sep 2009 5:46 p.m. PST

How about 'trainable'… seems like that could be a useful if clinically anachronistic term.
What about botanical terms like 'pistil', 'anther' and 'stamen'?
What about made up words like 'mufarb' and 'bramper'?

Maybe it's best to limit all communication on the site to a small set of pictograms that we can create rebus messages with.

mad monkey 107 Sep 2009 9:11 p.m. PST

Cuneiform. Worked for the Sumerians. They were peaceful urbanites, under the centralised enlightened rule of Ur, till those nasty Elamites came down from thier hills and caused a ruckus…adding squares and circles to the elegant wedges. Simply barbaric.

Let me guess – some oversensitive arse-wipe hit the complaint button about, right, Bill?

Tarleton07 Sep 2009 11:44 p.m. PST

They are both rather tame for nowadays. I'm suprised anyone is " offended " by being called one.

Cerdic07 Sep 2009 11:47 p.m. PST

Connard – what is wrong with 'boyo'?

"General Melchet, there is something wrong with your girlfriend."

"Oh my god! She's not Welsh is she!"

Dances With Words Fezian08 Sep 2009 2:18 a.m. PST

Well, IF you REALLY want my 'opinion'….'sticks and stones can break my bones, but words can never hurt me'…(unless I LET them…)

If someone wants to 'curse' me or 'put me down' or somehow disparge me/making themselves feel better about THEMSELVES or 'pom-pom's on nappy uniforms…GO FOR IT!

But to tell you the truth…I'm getting really TIRED of all the 'trauma-drama' and this 'politically correct/un-correctness' where it FEELS like nobody can say anything, anywhere at anytime…without raising somebody's wrath!

I'm USED to seeing it in the 'media'…where EVERYTHING is always being 'spun' one way or a dozen. But this is TMP for goodness sake!

I want to find out about MINIATURES and miniatures-related stuff! Like will we see OTHER 'shuttlecraft' from ADB for the roms, kzin, klingons, gorn or just feddies and missiles and drones?

Will we see any 'not-Prawn-type aliens' from District 8 7/9ths?

Is the 'new' space hulk REALLY that different from the 'old' other than costing more and being more complicated with less detail OR vice versa????

Yeah, I could 'avoid' the trauma-drama by AVOIDING reading topics like this…(but they seem to creep into about every thread at one time or another these days)…or I could just say 'To R'yleth with it'….and SLISH myself OFF TMP for good….

But that would be like cutting my mating tentacle off to spite my gills!

I'm DEPENDENT on TMP for 'news' and info on 'what's out there' and keeping in touch with the industry and have been since what, 2001?

IF I didn't have TMP as a 'home-base'…well, a lot of projects NEVER would have started, Nor would they be about to come to fruition…(hint, hint *cough* BLACK CAT BASES*cough*)

But I'm off-point..(as usual)!

Bill, this is your 'house' as you've said…and whether we are 'paying clubmembers, merchants or just visiting/passing by'…YOU have the 'final say'…(thought it's nice to have some continuity and guidelines from which to TRY to stay 'between the lines' on…)…so 'why ask why?'

I BELIEVE calling someone a 'swearword' or certainly 'racially charged negatives'…(N's and N's) among those is just not 'right'. But we shouldn't have to sit down and read thru a list of ???? words so as to 'not offend' someone's delicate sensibilities?

If I'm 'Welsh' or a yobo or a boyo or a yo-yo…and I don't like being called that/put down by someone I can Bleeped text them or object to their comment/call in the 'teacher' to make Johnny stop teasing me!

Or we can all just stop talking to each other and then there won't BE any controversy or TMP! That would sorta put a crimp in the old budget for you and shaft the rest of us outta the one place we've found (for the most part) where we can find out the most stuff…about the most stuff…even better than GOOGLE!!!

So how about it BILL and 'kiddies'….can we play 'nice' or should we just take our keyboards, dip and pom-poms and all 'go home' and lose one of the few things that keeps life a bit more 'interesting' than the cheesedoodle crumbs we get on Network/national media??

Ok, wordy as usual…but SLISH-IT….this is really getting my gills in a an uproar! How about a little common sense and courtesy and we all go back to playing with our bits of tin, lead, plastic and whatever…and not 'fornicate the canine'…

Ravenwood08 Sep 2009 3:02 a.m. PST

I'd be downright confused…here that's a racial slur applied to Koreans by elderly Japanese people…

GarnhamGhast08 Sep 2009 3:32 a.m. PST

Yobbo is not even remotely offensive in England. This is getting really really silly. What board did the complaint come from, I'd like to know?

Palafox08 Sep 2009 4:13 a.m. PST

Yobbo?, what a lame name.

Bob the Temple Builder08 Sep 2009 4:22 a.m. PST

Yob (from which Yobboo is derived) is what is called shop or back slang. This is where the letters of a word are reversed so that people who are not 'in the know' cannot understand what is being said.

Yob = Boy

Other examples: Dlo (pronounced Dee-low) = Old; Krop = Pork

streetline08 Sep 2009 4:49 a.m. PST

Reminds me of Bill Hicks talking about Crips, Bloods, and hooligans…

Personal logo Editor in Chief Bill The Editor of TMP Fezian08 Sep 2009 4:51 a.m. PST

Now you're actually actively searching for things to be offended by?

No, someone complained about it, and since I'm not familiar with the term, I wondered how offensive it really was.

streetline08 Sep 2009 6:35 a.m. PST

About the same as numpty.

No, someone complained about it, and since I'm not familiar with the term,

Someone complained, and you did not know what it meant? Case closed.

Just tell the omoadhaun to shut his gob.

IS TMP turning into the mythical Polish Parliament, where every single noble, no matter how petty or insignificant, had a veto?

anleiher08 Sep 2009 11:08 a.m. PST

"No, someone complained about it, and since I'm not familiar with the term, I wondered how offensive it really was."

Perhaps that someone should focus on holding on to their milk money lest their mother get mad.

La Long Carabine08 Sep 2009 1:51 p.m. PST

IS TMP turning into the mythical Polish Parliament, where every single noble, no matter how petty or insignificant, had a veto?

I hope so that sounds like fun.

How thin -skinned are people anyways??? Good grief! Take the hit and keep moving.

Ditto Tango 2 109 Sep 2009 8:20 a.m. PST

No, someone complained about it,

Please identify the yobbo. grin

No seriously, someone as silly as that needs to be identified.

nah yobbo is very very mild…the person complaining is either Korean (as mentioned above) or has tissue paper for skin!!!!!
