About a year ago I saw some round bases that looked like decking. I think they were 40mm but not sure. Anyone have some recommendations for pirate bases. I plan on doing only ship to ship actions so deck bases would be great.

Make the bases sandy. It can double for either a sandy beach or the sanded decks of a ship cleared for action.

For 25/28 figs I use 1" washers. They can be finished anyway you want – grass, sand as noted above or with striated styrene for a deck.

Craft sticks on top of square 1" bases make great planking.

I made planking on pirate bases from thin strips of balsa wood. I cut it into narrow strips and then halved the thickness. Some of my bases are all planks, others fade into dirt in the same colour.

If the figures are on slota bases you can put planks between their feet to cover the slot, if they have cast on bases you can trim the base to the same width as the decking and make it blend in.

Someone recently listed a larger base, for a vignette.

$6.00 USD for a 4' x 5" base seems a bit high to me, but it did look nice. I am cheap when it comes to purchasing bases for my figures.

James…are you looking for these bases?

That's what I did for all my pirates, live and undead. Very easy and cheap to base too, involving just a plain base, white glue and sand. Though I must admit they look more beachy than decky.

This guy makes the best 'pirate' bases!

And the shipping is a decent deal too… Take a look at his pirate range…

I have ordered from them in the past MULTIPLE times. Always a good transaction.

James,

If you want square bases, Evergreen styrene plastic sheets come in scribed wooden sheets that can paint up quite nicely, especially with a little extra work. You do have to cut them to size yourself.

You know I never thought of that! I have used styrene plastic sheets for decking on my Roman Galleys. It just never clicked to do so for bases.

Litko did a pile of round bases for me which I just did as sandy that I felt are fine for both land and deck based games.
