Using the 'Pirates' plasticard ships for 'Kiss Me Hardy', but I have ended up with loads of "Schooners" – the ones with sails that are triangular and for'd/Aft(lateen sails), rather than square rigged. Any ideas what I can use them for? The small ones are fine for sloops, but some have 3 or more masts, and are the size of 1st/2nd rates. What to do with them?

The way I am classing them – 5 masts- bowsprit, fore, main, mizzen and spanker- Larger 1st Rate, 4 masts (no Spanker) 2nd rates and 100 gun 1sts, 3 masts, or 2+ bowsprit- 3rd raters, the two masters as yet undecided whether to make 4th, 5th or 4-6th.

I also have a number of galleys- sails + oars. I'm thinking Ottoman- would that be feasable?

Maybe they could be Xebecs? Weren't those large lateen rigged man o'war used by North African states along with the gallies?

If they're the size of 3-deckers you're pretty stuck, galleys were still in use by the Ottomans (and North Africans, as James said) pretty late. There are references to a few rotting in Constantinople docks as late as the 1830s.

18th century colonial expeditions (Louisburg, Bagaduce) tended to rely on large number of schooners--large and small--as troop and supply transports.

May have to do some ahistoric scenarios, with Britain/France vs eastern Med pirates/corsiars. Already had an idea they could be cargo ships- RN intercepting a French convoy maybe. KMH uses 1 damage point per real gun to work out how much damage a ship can take (firing is by a 'gunnery factor- 74s get 9 etc). How many DP for a merchantman do you think- same as equivalent sized Ship of the line? Same speed?

Maybe not so ahistoric – Barbary pirates were quite frequently in conflict with a number of "Western" powers, big and small.

I use mine as Xebecs and Dhows.

smaller ones suit pirates

LH – the galleys can definitely be used in Mediterranean naval gaming. We've done several games using the Barbarossa rules (available free from link ). Game reports at:

The reason I have got so many is that the few remaining 'Works' (UK discount book stores, in administration I think) are selling the 'Fire and Steel' sets 59p, 2 for a quid (Waterstones still £3.00 GBP a pack). I cleared the Milton Keyens branch out yesterday! (8 packs)
