I've been buying and building skirmish kit for the Huertgen Forest battles in 28mm- using DH/7C for rules. has anyone run this in any scale/any rule set? If so how did you do the terrain? Particularly the elevations?
An aside- which spelling is correct? Hurtgen with an umlaut over the vowel u or the Huertgen used above- both show up in titles offered from bibliographies covering the battle(s)…

Have not played it (although I do want to in due time), but living only about an hours drive from it… Hürtgenwald.

Cheers,

Burkhard

Just to prove it (since the iste is in German only):

huertgenwald.de

(Obviously remember that Umlate are not available in URL´s, but the site itself gives the correct spelling!)

If I remember my college German correctly, u with an umlaut and ue are the same thing.

The "UE" is just an alternative. The correct spelling would still be "Ü".

It is a bit like writing "can´t" while one should not use abbreviations in written English. Not exactly wrong, but a sign of bad form (or at worst lack of education).

Cheers,

Burkhard

Umlaut is correct. Ue is just an anglisisation.

Anyone know how I can use umlauts and accents on TMP? I can't do it with my (British) keyboard, so how do I access special characters when I am typing?

This is important to me, it shows respect for other languages.

Presuming you have Windows as an operating system there is a character map. To quote the machine

"To open Character Map, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Character Map."

There is a way of creating shortcuts but I can't quite recall how you do that.

The Umlaut requires a little extra effort: alt + 0252

I've done it as a Spearhead (definitely NOT a skirmish game)scenario almost 15 years ago--didn't really use the elevation much. IIRC, the gully area was heavily wooded (except for the fire break) so sight lines weren't really an issue for the most part. I did make folks sending vehicles on the trail roll to see what happens (breakdown, block trail, get through but more slowly than anticipated).

The end result was pretty close to the 28th Division's attack, though I think when we ended the game the US still had a toe hold in one of the villages (I think that's 'cause they actually managed to get some more armor down the trail before it became blocked).

Thanks Katzbalger. I was thinking of starting with the battles for Schmidt and the Germeter-Huertgen Highway. The idea is to run 3-4 separate but interlocked scenarios that start around the Jump-off date of Nov. 2nd 44 and end
Nov. 7th with the German counter attack on Vossenack. If I can pull it off and run the whole thing I'll post an AAR. I'm also glad the "umlaut" question is cleared up now.
