I am gaming WW2 North Africa in 10mm (UK: N Gauge) and would like to have some barbed wire for field defences and also to mark out airfield perimeters for a LRDG raid type game. I have seen some barbed wire fence from train modelling companies but it looks too obviously 'farm' for my liking – I was really looking for coil if possible. Can anyone please help me out with a manufacturer? Many thanks in advance. |

Not sure about manufacturer but I've bought 15mm barbed wire from Antenocities Workshop [ link ] before. Good service and not a bad price I thought. BigLee Blog link |

At that scale I would think just a piece of wire would work well. The barbs would be really tiny. Or, buy the "farm" stuff and wrap it around a pen to make a coil. |

S&A Scenics supply it too – it may well be the same stuff: scenics.co.uk |

GW: 4m coiled @ £5.85p = £1.46 GBP per meter S&A Scenics: 10 meters @ £9.00 GBP = 90p per meter Scarab: 10 meters @ £5.50 GBP = 55p per meter Antenociti: 9 meters @ £2.50 GBP = 28p per meter To make a coil is incredibly simple: take a paintbrush or pencil, wrap the wire around it lots of times, pull it off, done.
Your only real problem is that at 10mm figure scale they are all way too big and you would be better off using just coiled thin, single strand wire. |

For 10mm, fuse wire made into a coil as described above looks fine. |

I game in 6mm and what I use for barbed wire coils is old ink pen springs. I mount them on alittle bit of card so they will not roll on the table and they work great. I think they would also work for 10mm? |

Thanks for some great ideas. I like the old 'ink pen spring' idea as it strikes me that they will have strength enough to withstand the hazards of gaming. I also like the 'roll wire around the pen' idea, provided I can find wire suitable enough (there seems to be loads out there on EBay that people use in making jewellery – I might check some of that out). Thanks again. |

If you know anyone that works in a machine shop they can get you different sized coils from the lathe as illustrated by this picture of 1/300 – 1/285th scale wire stands used in the GHQ rule system. picture Be careful of the material as it can be very sharp. Handle with care. Will |

I use jewellers wire (purchased from your nearest craft store) wrapped around a pencil. The pencil gives it little crinkles which might be mistake for barbs;-) It is a good idea to base it in suitable lengths. I wouldn't use lathe scrap, it is razor sharp. |

If you have an old screen window. You can cut along a single wire. The cut cross wires appear like barbs. Then wrap the single strand around a pencil. Phil |
