Having had my suspicions almost confirmed by other TMPers that no Kubelwagens were in service in May 40, (yes, I know, now I have said that, someone will find the one picture of the only Kubelwagen on the Western Front in May 40) what models in 15mm are there? I am using the Horch and the Krupp-Protze from a couple of sources. But someone mentioned the Wanderer and a google search seems to suggest that Kubelwagen was a generic term not restricted to the VW derivative. I take great delight in finding and using obscure and outdated items. I even use the SdKfz 231 6 Rad. I think it looks great. What other models of the 39-40 era are there to sub for the KW besides the Horch and the Krupp-Protze? |

If you like bizarre and obscure, you can look at the Sdkfz 247 command car. link link The Daimler Benz 170V was an early light personnel vehicle and the "Medium Uniform Personnel Vehicle was also commonplace in multiple roles – command, radio, communications, etc. Horch built most of these and they are one of the vehicles that had twin spares mounted to either side of the vehicle. (Not to be confused with the Steyr 1500). If the occupant is a high mucky-muck, then the Mercedes G4 (the six-wheeled car Hitler bounced about in) would be a tempting target. Wyatt |

Could you point me to the relevant first topic please? I know that the Kübelwagen was new by the time the invasion of France began, but I am fairly sue that at least some must have been in service already. For one the VW Type 82 prototypes saw service in Poland and the serial production of the Kübelwagen began in Feb- 1940 with 1000 units being produced for the Wehrmacht in that year. So I would assume that at least 1/3 of those should have been produced by May and that almost all of these would have reached units destined to see service in the west. Cheers, Burkhard |

TMP link The facts were provided. (As well as some un-facts). Conclusions were drawn. |

So is now a good time to post a pic of a Type 82 in France in 1940? Incidently, most cars are refered too as Kubelwagens in Germans TOEs from what I can gather
The term is a generic one used for any vehicle of that designation. |

A really good resource is Reinhard Franks' "Cars of the Wehrmacht" – which is available in German as well as English. David Doyle's "German Military Vehicles" says that only 100 of the VW Typ 82 were built 1938 through 1940 with those either being used for testing or given to Nazi officials. Only 630 were built 1942-44. These purpose-built military vehicles were originally designated the Typ 92, they were redesignated the 82E and were Kafer bodies on Kubelwagen chassis. The Type 87 had 4WD being equipped with the Schwimmwagen's power train. Wyatt |

Oh, if you're looking for a staff car, you might want to look at the Opel Olympia. Here are some pictures, including some from the above-mentioned Reinhard Frank book: link Wyatt |

If you think 1/87 vehicles would work with your 15mm'ers, try these 170V's: link I have a variety of these for use with my HO stuff. |

Hey! Dont look past the QRF site! I made some masters for them. There is a 15mm Opel Kapitan and a Fiat 1938 sedan in the miscellaneous section. Just like today, car companies had factories in various other places. This applied very much to FIAT. The Spider Saloon was manufactured all over Europe, including Germany. Many of these appeared in European armies. Some even served in the British army. link The Opel Kapitan is very similar to other Opel sedans. The main difference was due to radiator grill and other final fittings. The model can be used for a whole range of purposes through WW2. picture The Renault van was also widely used by various Nations. Particularly Germany. picture |

If you think 1/87 vehicles would work with your 15mm'ers Unfortunately they are too large. But considering the range available, I wish they would work! |

Thanks Guys. I think I will probably go the Mal route and get Kapitans and Spiders. I think the Germans using the Renault utility before they have conquered France might be just outside the accepted rules. |

"I know that the Kübelwagen was new by the time the invasion of France began, but I am fairly sue that at least some must have been in service already." Schiffer's book "VW at War – Kubelwagen and Schwimmwagen Part 1" states that some Kubelwagens saw service during the invasion of France. |
