I want to put on a modern air fight for my wargames group. There will be in the region of 4 to 10 players. I have in mind giving each player 2-3 planes so if one gets shot down they won't be sitting on there hands for the rest of the evening. It would be nice to have rules that simulates the latest kit but that's optional. Daivid |

Fox Two Reheat, or my favorite, Clash of Sabres (1950's – 1070's, plus Falklands and Iran-Iraq Conflicts), if you want 3-D gaming. No hexmat is required for play with these rules. link |

Another vote for Clash of Sabres. |

I play C21 because I feel they are simpler than Fox Two Reheat and Clash of Sabres but I also enjoy the latter two sets of rules. Seems like I am always trying to simplify 3D in the latter two and add 3D to the first. Talk about being schizo. Depending on era you might also want to look at the Wings at War Series (Mig Alley, Thud Ridge, etc.) They have a light free version called Desert Spitfires which you can get as a download from Wargames Vault. |

Allen57, If you were to use hexes for the wings of war series (which i understand does not require them) what size hexes would you use? |

Commanderroj, I have no experience with Wings of War miniatures by FFG. I think those are 1/144. For any air wargame I feel hex size depends on what size Aircraft you are using. I use the TD 1/600 aircraft with Litko stands for most eras and 1/300 Navwar aircraft for WWI. The bases measure 1,25 inches flat to flat and I have some larger ones for stability with my WWI bombers. I would like hexes the size of the bases to be about the same size as the distance between the outboard engines on a B-29 in your scale of choice. I had a friend with a computer program which would generate whatever hex sizes you wanted. He would print sheets of the grid which we used under a sheet of plexiglass. By using hexes this size you can fit a bomber formation on the table without too much overlap and a fighter in an adjacent hex is not rubbing wings too badly with the bomber. In reality however the hexes on my game mat are smaller and I just let the stands overlap when aircraft are in adjacent hexes. Generally the larger the hexes the better but hexes which are just slightly small than the wingsapn of a heavy bomber are a good compromise. |

Sorry Allen57, i didnt mean Wings of War, i mean the Tumbling Dice associated "Wings at War" series like Thud Ridge (which is the set for which i am having a dilemma about terrain size, although i dont have my hands on it yet) etc. I too will be using 1:600 TD aircraft. |
