I'm going to begin to play Flames of war, but Im not sure which Army should I choose… I think I need a little bit help with this…

Which army? Which army book?

Thanks!

Late war Romanian? Not the best performers, but one of the few that can fight on either side.

Vicshere25 Aug 2009 10:35 a.m. PST

I chose US Armored Company. Good mobile force, not too expensive to create, and with a little tweaking can be used in most war periods…

HistoriFigs25 Aug 2009 10:35 a.m. PST

I prefer the Finns – early war or late war – they can even fight against the Germans…

Pick a theater of war (N. Africa, W. Europe, E. Europe) that interests you. That will help narrow your search.

Personnally I started with N. Africa because I wanted to do something outside the norm. I then built an Italian Army simply because most people go for the powerful stuff and I wanted the challenge.

I went with Italians because my gaming group needed one more Axis player and I didn't want a force like the other two guys on my side… turns out, learning about the army and painting it up was some of the best fun I had in years. Of course, no sooner had I finished my army than everyone else decided that it was too much trouble to paint theirs and they quietly dropped the game…

Since my dad was in the war I picked the theatre that he saw action in, which was North Africa/Tunisia, and started by building a US Light Tank Company. 17 M3 Stuarts backed up by armoured infantry.

Well, I don't do Flames of War, but a lot would depend on what the local gamers are doing – as noted, if the local group are all doing North Africa, having a Tiger II company won't be of much good for gaming

Generically, mid-war Germans go a long way (Italy, Russian Front, Northwest Europe)

I play Soviets. I chose them for their bravery.
I started with the Stalingrad book, then Ostfront, this is due to be republished soon.

I think that whatever theatre you choose to do, that you think about doing TWo sides, allied and axis. I don't know how many times I have painted up one side only to have the other guy(s) who were involved with the project decide to quit, leaving me holding the bag.

I picked Poles, 1939. Now just waiting on the rules to catch up.

TodCreasey25 Aug 2009 12:24 p.m. PST

I did Late War germans because I can use them for both fronts. Mid/late war Canadians are next.

Try a Fallschrimjager Strum Rota army. Those seem popular.

Nordic Miniatures25 Aug 2009 12:36 p.m. PST

Im thinking about British, Russians or US army. Maybe One Russias and the othe from the Axis. Which one from the Axis?

I will buy Ostfront (Is coming a new edition?)

charles popp25 Aug 2009 12:58 p.m. PST

I went with US Arm Inf Company , lots of fun fun fun .

If you are looking for Axis I would say Romanian or Italian.

I have an early war French army, like Bob and his Dog, I am waiting for the rules to catch up. I also have a small armored Hungarian force that needs more infantry.

a) I would always paint both sides when getting into a new period/game.

b) Germans get to fight everyone, both mid and late war they get big scary toys to play with, early war they don't (apart from 88s and Stukas).

c) Pick your opposition. I always have a soft spot for the plucky Brits, but Russians are an interesting contrast to the mighty Germans. If you don't want to paint a ton of stuff though, go for something high quality like Brits or US.

d) Fringe stuff like Hungarian motorised troops, Bulgarian paratroops, Brazilians etc are interesting as a sideline but perhaps not the best thing to start WW2 wargaming with.

e) It is easier to paint tanks than infantry.

Proniakin25 Aug 2009 4:19 p.m. PST

Funny thing is that when I started painting up WW2 figures for FoW I was experienced at painting infantry but had a mental block about learning to paint tanks.

One with an intelligence briefing that can be downloaded from the FOW website. Means you have not paid out for a handbook if you decide you don't like it. If you do buy all the books you can and expand on your basic farce.

Caesar27 Aug 2009 7:10 a.m. PST

"expand on your basic farce."

Typing error or Freudian slip?

Nordic Miniatures27 Aug 2009 12:23 p.m. PST

Any good exemple of intelligence briefing from the website to use qith my Russian army? Later war, please.

myrm1128 Aug 2009 2:47 a.m. PST

There's a heavy tank force and a Light Assault gun force that I can think of off the top of my head.

Farstar22 Sep 2009 10:37 a.m. PST

Go with Chinese Mid or Late War, so you can field captured Japanese, early German and Russian, and midwar Lend-Lease and British equipment all in one force. Drive your opponents nuts.
