Finally got the production line moving. Just finished the Hastati for Legio I at Zama:

Now if I can grimly and efficiently keep going at this rate, I'll have enough grim and efficient legionaries by about April…

Cheers to all

Great stuff – beautifully painted, and lovely photos.

Very nice, Paul! I'm plugging away towards Zama, myself, but at a slightly slower rate. Gulp.

Thanks for the comments. Simon has an added hidden secret weapon to help with the production of painted figures – Gregory Privat!

Gregory is indeed a Weapon of Mass Construction! ;-)

Don't feel bad guys I have been building legions since around 73 or so in 15mm and 25mm. I still have about four current new lines to buy and finish (1st Corps, Champion, Fantassan, and prob one or two more). It is a never ending process.

Hmmm, I looked, but I don't seem to be in there.

hee hee – I think you're the first officer, with shield raised ready to strike, face hidden. This is the fifth figure from the left as you look at the front of the unit…The thing I liked about the 1st Corps figs is that even when they supply two officers with the same pose as part of the command group, they have different helmets. One is Corinthian. I like it when a manufacturer makes a little difference like that.

Simon, how does he manage it? I think you're wise to involve others in the painting needed to set up the game, and yours sounds even larger than ours will be. I've decided to paint all of the legionaries, because I want them all to be done in the same style. But various other folks are taking care of the Carthaginian army and support for the Romans. We will probably put the game on several times, to take full advantage of all the effort. I may be able to do some more work in between times, probably on the Roman cavalry and maybe some Numidians, but there's no way I'll manage that as well as the legions before the first game in April.

Good luck; it's been interesting to compare progress, and it really helps to keep the commitment going.

Cheers

Yes it's nice to know that others are working in parallel.

I hope I have time to paint the one legion, some Roman and Numidian cavalry, the terrain boards and to base all the nice stuff Greg is painting. Some other stuff is bound to crop up though…. for instance I'd really like to do lots of casualty stands.

I'm thinking about taking it to Salute, the following week.

Cheers, Simon

Oh no, casualty stands…

Even though they're not quite right, I'm thinking of going with some of the plastic Caesareans and giving them the same shield designs as the legions. I don't think anyone will notice! This wasn't my idea, it came from a conversation with one of our players last Tuesday.

Cheers again

I was thinking about trying to sculpt a couple of generic heaps of bodies, and casting them in resin. I don't know if my modelling skills are up to that, though.

The idea is it is played in parallel with lots of different rulesets. At the last one I went to, there were around 10 different sets used.

Hi Thor, there's usually a write-up in The Society of Ancients' journal, Slingshot, of all of the games, orders of battle and so on. At one point the Society will post details of the battle on their website. Just in case you don't have it:

soa.org.uk

The idea is that as many rulesets as possible are used to try to recreate a major battle at a Battle Day held annually in England. We got involved in Scotland because we thought it would be nice to duplicate the event in another part of the UK. It's kind of growing from there…

Cheers
Paul
