I'm new to miniature wargaming and I decided to give it a shot since AK 47 Republic looks like fun (I have to love a game where there are rules for rolling up a flag). I've got a good number of figures that I'm in the process of painting up. Then comes basing.

Other games, in the same scale and time period, look like fun but use different sized basings. I'm not super keen on having to buy more of the same figures to represent the same outfits for different games (Ambush Alley, for example).

So the question: Is there a way to swap bases for figures relatively easily?

If you base your figures on steel washers (or magnets) and make unit bases vice versa you can easily pop figures on and off.

Both Ambush Alley and AK-47 should work ok with slightly non-standard basing too.

Mount them individually on small washers, then cut flexible magnetic material to the stand size required and attach the figures as needed.

But I think you'll find that the mounting system for most games isn't crucial, as long as everyone is mounted similarly.

I've been mounting mine on #10 washers from the local Hardware Store (Home Depot), you can get a decent sized pack for about $4. USD You can get flexible magnet material at your local crafts store (Michaels)in sheets for about $10. USD That you can cut to suit your needs.

I've been less than pleased with trying to mount 15s on washers. Decide what game systems you think you'll like, base your guys for the smallest and mount them on larger bases, "sabots" in my local group, with rubber cement.

Magnets. I hadn't thought of those. I'll give them a shot. As Ambush Alley is a 1:1 game, that would be the smallest so individual mounting seems to be in my future. Thanks for the idea.

Hey, Cap Napalm – Lots of AA players mount their units in fireteams and just keep track of casualties instead of pulling figures off the table. Since you do LOS and targeting from the center of a unit rather than from individual figures in AA and FoF, unit mounting might actually be easier to play with.

It's all up to you – just wanted you to know you won't break anything mounting your fireteams or mobs of insurgents as units instead of individually.

Take care!

Shawn.

Many options and opinions on basing between rule sets have been discussed in the past.

One common rule of thumb is that for similar troop ratio systems. The changing from a casting to casting skirmish system to a 1:50 scale will require rebasing. But using a 1:10 scale and changing to another 1:10 or 1:5 ratio set of rules may not require it.

As long as both sides are using the same basing, then there is the view that rebasing to the new system is not mandatory.
