I know it's a bit of a tall order, but does anyone know about a (web)resource for a map, showing historical Fort Sheridan, IL, preferably with a legend showing what's what? Ideal timeframe would be WWI, WWII or in between. I know parts of it still exists and can be seen on Google Maps, etc., but it's a bit difficult to see how much have changed. Thanks |

You might try contacting the Chicago Historical Society to see if they have any old maps. Fort Sheridan was established in response to the Haymarket Riots in Chicago during the late 1800s at the request of the well to do who lived in the northern suburbs of Chicago, an area called the North Shore. They used to have a military museum on site, which I visited as a kid. I live about 5 minutes drive from the Fort. The grounds have been developed into private housing with many of the old buildings recycled into residential homes. The main buildings still exist as a result of that, although many of the barracks, built for WW2 have been torn down. The Army Reserve still retains a corner of the grounds for its purposes. The old airfield has been plowed under and turned into a park. As a kid, I could recall the sound of the occasional aircraft landing at Fort Sheridan. It is now called The Town of Fort Sheridan, jointly owned by the cities of Highwood and Highland Park. Maybe one of those cities will have copies of old maps. |

I don't know of any websites but there are at least 3 books on Ft. Sheridan. The Images of America Series and Then and Now Series both have books on Ft. Sheridan that include aerial photos of the post over the years. There's also a commemorative book published about the time the post closed – that I can't find at the moment. I believe most of the artifacts held at the museum were transferred to the Lake County Historical Museum if they weren't returned to the Army. |
