I saw this earlier today. I am not sure its the missle or what they were planting (maybe both)that made the big bang

I don't *think* that was pure Hellfire, look at the size of the hot spot on the road after the blast. Looks like the Hellfire missile got the IED to go off. |

Another video along the same line. Can you say oops? I like the guy at the end seeing if any of the AK's are worth saving. link

Cool
a very big bang!! I am assuming that was at night??? |
| Mithmee | 10 Aug 2009 5:52 p.m. PST |
No that was not overkill. Those individuals were planning to kill US service members and what happen was not enough. Does make my day though. On the 2nd link they should have waited for EoD. Plus they should not had 4 guys digging at once. |

Easy, mithmee, don't wander into the Blue Fez's turf. Hey, Magfor61, if you read the comments on that link, those weren't jihadists, they were on our side (or at least not trying to kill us). Even if they were doing something incredibly stupid, that doesn't mean we get to rejoice in their deaths. May Allah have mercy on their souls. ==== Now that I'm not feeling quite so angry with people that should have listened: Isn't it just amazing how much of an advantage those stabilized thermal imager sights give the forces that have them? Aside from Ambush Alley, has any modern game got a good representation of how much an advantage NODS+comms+vehicles is? |

I am assuming that was at night? If you listen to the radio chatter, at ):16 he says, "It's approximately midnight right now" Isn't it just amazing how much of an advantage those stabilized thermal imager sights give the forces that have them? Not only the gyro thermal systems, but also the magnification which is obviously letting the Apache watch them from a long way off. Sound carries at night, especially in open desert, yet they are happy to keep working so the helicopter is evidently far enough away that they feel they are not being observed. From firing to impact is approx 4 seconds with a Hellfire (although they are still within 30mm range) – someone can probably figure out a range from that. |

For AA, one side gets to see and act as if in daylight. The other bumbles around in the dark, unaware they are being targeted 90% of the time. I imagine that helps to even the score a bit, when dealing with insurgents. What I found to be most interesting in the footage is the clear ability to "see" the IED in the road, due to the different heat signature compared to the roadway's temp. I imagine that tech should be used a bit more, if it isn't already by our troops, during the daytime as well, in order to help save lives. |

the heat difference would disappear rather quickly if it was covered with dirt and left alone for awhile tho right? |
| Top Gun Ace | 11 Aug 2009 10:35 a.m. PST |
I'm not so sure about that, but it certainly would get closer to the heat of the surrounding dirt. Metal absorbs and loses heat more quickly than other substances, so may be more visible via infrared detectors than normal during various periods during the day/night. |

IR cameras work better at night because of the contrast of temperature--But during the first Gulf War the problem of Iraqi fake tanks was solved using the F111's IR imaging--the tanks made of wood didn't retain heat whereas the steel ones showed up!!!! |

When I was in the Navy, we had a handheld Thermal Imager that we used for firefighting. You could literally read someone's lips through it, since the different parts of the face are at different temperatures, so I don't think it's necessarily a tech problem, it's a matter of how to use it without getting a lot of false positives. |

Lion is the Stars, What me wander into Blue Fez turf. I would never do that by accident. Quite honestly I think I might be to much for Blue Fez. |
