Hi! Ive been pondering having a go at painting up some moderns and quie like the idea of peter pigs AK-47 Republic ruleset but am a bit unsure about spending nearly £20.00 GBP for the rulebook (Ive got some of the older peter pig books and they were a bit poorly constructed) Does anyone have any reviews of the game or indeed any blogs/battle reports? All the best |

I didn't know the new rules were 20 quid.Wow! I think the original rules are the best. The 'new' versions simply bolt on details that add nothing to the elegance of the basic game. See if you can pick up a copy of the original rules second-hand. |

(Ive got some of the older peter pig books and they were a bit poorly constructed) Do you mean the rules or the books? |

The older editions were lovable: if the writing left something to be desired, and the binding was clunky, you felt like you were getting what you paid for. Now, the price is high, because of color photos and glossy paper (at least in PBI II, which is the only one I've shelled out the cash for). But the typos are worse than before. I don't see the value, and am happy stcking to the old comb-bound versions. Allen |

I haven't read the new AK, so can't comment on the content, but the finish is a high quality colour print, perfect bound (probably using one of the newer thermal systems which has made perfect binding more cost effective for lower print runs). I'm not a fan of perfect binding for rules books. I like to be able to open them flat, or fold them back, so I can quickly refer to the section I want without them snapping shut and leave them open on the page I want (I know, that's what the QRS is supposed to be for). If you do that enough with a perfect bound book ,eventually it snaps. You then have a loose leaf book. :-) |

I think the pre-battle system has been expanded and improved and includes newer choices for the Armies. I prefer the newer way for reserves and reinforcements. I like the terrain system more and the carrier capacities and rules for transports. I liked the older system but think I will really like this new version too. One think I liked about the older add on addition was the printable buildings for one's templates – made a good 30's or so. Still has typos which may be improved in a later printing but still a worthwhile purchase – The black and white uniform section was a little silly/useless but that's why the Almighty invented Osprey's et al. Check the links on Peter Pigs website – should connect you to a lot of AK47 sites. My rules were 35usd with shipping, reasonable, I think. |

PP rules tend to feel a bit quirky, with everything having its own separate rules. But AK47 is a lot of fun, even if a few bits could use some examples |

Another vote for the first edition, clunky lay-out and loveable stick-figure line drawings and all. The Glossy New One is written with the new Peter Pig attention to spelling, grammar, sentence construction and play-testing and redundancy. Worst of all, if you had taken a straw-poll of a hundred AK47 players on 'What's best about the system?' they would have answered "1) simplicity 2) uncomplex 3) fun.". What do the new rules do? remove simplicity and add complexity. I am treasuring my first edition copy, and am glad I bought two so I could put it in a ring-binder for simplicity. Pat Pat |

Hi! I have pieces of eight and it was a bit special. The stick men diagrams were quie entertaining but the rules seemed ok. It was more a case of the choice of yellow paper to print them on and the fact they had been stapled together! I may have to give the new edition a go as I dont know if anyone still has the first edition for sale! Thanks for the suggestions though! |

I feel really bad dissing PP, as I love their figures. If bad spelling and grammar don't bug you, give them a go. Pat |

Well looking back at my previous post I cant really comment about spelling! Ive noticed that Cavalier books seem to still have the previous edition in stock as well as the supplement. Is it worth me buying them or shelling out for the new edition as it will cost me the exact same price and if the new edition is a bit more complex that can be helped! |

Where are you based ? I only ask this as Martin is running some multiplayer games of AK this monday at our games club, and it would be a good chance to play before you pay so to speak. Also I know they have some old copies of the game left so it might be worth dropping them an email. :) Ps the game is in Bournemouth |

Alas I am in Worcester! Ive ordered myself the old edition of the rules from Cavalier and will have a good read through them once they arrive! |

You can make sense of the new rules on the first pass through with a bit of work. Grammar and spelling aside, there are numbered lists where the same idea appears as an entry more than once. Not much you can say about that. |

I'm a pre-newbie to miniature wargaming and the 2009 AK Republic is on its way to me. I could use some help in building up the kind of force that I want (Mercenary cored army a la 5 commando or Executive Outcomes), since I have no idea what I'm doing. Would this be an appropriate place to ask? |
