Hi all

I had a game of Fire and Fury today with a friend of mine. We came across a couple of situations where we needed the rules clarified with respect to charge combat. Can anyone help. I will send my questions by email.

Regards

Chris

Okay….thanks all. Here's the question:

1. A Federal brigade(8 stands fresh in good order supported line) was being charged by 2 Rebel Divisions. The first charge was in the flank by a 6 stand brigade(supported fresh in good order with attached Div commander). The other charge was to the front of the Federal brigade by a 8 stand rebel brigade in line disordered.

The first charge went in from the flank and the federal brigade was driven back. My friend and I were unsure of what to do with the second attacking brigade? That is, the one that was attacking from the front. Should it still have charged? I dont see how we could have combined the charges as there were 2 brigades attacking with different modifiers. That is, one was supported in good order with and attached Divisional commander, while the other was in line, disorder with no attached commander.

Can someone please help me with this.

Regards

Chris

my view on this is;
there is only one charge. 1 union brigade vs the 2 Rebel brigades. such things as disordered and supported depend on the balance between friendly brigades. so as you have 6 stands in good order, 8 disordered you get -1 disordered modifier.

all applicable modifers are added up and each side rolls 1D10.
The union would have fresh, supported, outnumbered 2-3, outflanked. modifer of -3.
Confederates get fresh, rebs charging, attached officer in there swinging, disordered. modifer of +2.

(don't forget to add -1 for any stand killed as the charges went in)

well thats my view anyway.
hope this all mkaes sense!

KingShaw has it right. One combat and you take into account all modifiers that apply.

Kingshaw has it!

and remember, to take losses into account, BUT, if a loss caused a change in unit status from fresh to worn you do not count it in the melee modifiers [whatever level they start the turn is kept].

Interesting note, in the NEW regimental Fire and Fury, that same melee would be factored differently.

In the example you cited, the Rebs suffer a -1 because 50% or more were disordered.

In the Regimental rules, when multiple units are considered, one determines the modifiers for each unit separately and uses the best. Thus a small 4 stand regiment [160 men] that was rated crack [+2] and fresh [+2] =+4; with a brother unit of 12 stands, that are veteran [+1} and worn [0]; the attacker would use the +4 provided by the force projection of the 4 stand unit.

I think this method is "transportable" as a game mechanic to Fire and Fury or Age of eagles [the Napoleonic variant of Fire and Fury].
