What are some movies with good jousting scenes in them.

My list is short:

A Knights Tale (of course)
Excalibur (judicial duel)
Ivanhoe (old one)
Ivanhoe (remake)

What have I missed?

What was the movie that started out with a somewhat surreal scene of two kids getting ready to joust on bicycles? "Once Upon a Time in Mexico"?

"The Miracle of the Wolfes" (translating from French), also known as "Secrets of Burgundian Court" in Russian: imdb.com/title/tt0055182

How realistic are these Joust scenes?

Daffy Doug30 Jul 2009 8:31 a.m. PST

Yes, even today, El Cid has the BEST jousting/dueling scene in a medieval film, ever….

Daffy Doug30 Jul 2009 8:32 a.m. PST

Stenic, you "jest", surely….

richarDISNEY30 Jul 2009 10:25 a.m. PST

Wasn't there a jousting scene in "Unidentified Flying Oddball" from Disney?

beer

jfleisher30 Jul 2009 10:33 a.m. PST

There's two guys jousting on bicycles in the movie "Quick Change" with Bill Murray.

That may be what Waco Joe is thinking of…

Waco Joe30 Jul 2009 10:49 a.m. PST

That was it! YouTube link

Thanks jfleisher.

JABBERWOCKY (1977) directed by Terry Gilliam (his first feature film), starring Michael Palin, includes a very impressive, gritty, bloody -- as well as hilarious -- tournament, held to find a champion knight capable of slaying the ferocious monster from which the movie gets its title. Includes the best frogmouth helm I've ever seen in a movie.

Daffy Doug30 Jul 2009 1:10 p.m. PST

The ONLY frogmouth helm ever seen in any movie: and the only trout helm too.

And the blood was a large part of the hilarity :)

Why do I feel like Jabberwocky's tournament is essentially as realistic as they come? (well, aside from the hide-and-seek phase: which would be realistic, if fully armored knights engaged in hide-and-seek: of course, I wasn't meaning to imply that there was anything unrealistic about how it was portrayed: only that I haven't ever heard of knights actually doing hide-and-seek tournaments)….

I just stuck "jousting in movies" into Google and came up with this: – link

Looks like there are 15 pages to check here.

El Cid has better jousting than A Knights Tale???

Jeremy Sutcliffe01 Aug 2009 1:07 p.m. PST

Knight's Tale is a fun film. El Cid is more serious. The joust is at a significant dramatic moment as is the joust in Ivanhoe.

There is therefore an intensity tto those jousts that completely outclass anything in Knight's Tale

The first season of the 2007 series 'The Tudors' has a few nice jousting scenes. Not sure about season's two or three as I've not seen 'em… yet.

IronMike03 Aug 2009 8:16 a.m. PST

A lot of people I knew (SCA folk, mostly) gave 'A Knight's Tale' a lot of grief for 'not being period'. My response to this is that AKT wasn't a historical film as much as it was a Sports movie, the 'sport' just happened to be jousting…

Deucey Supporting Member of TMP03 Aug 2009 10:10 a.m. PST

And jousting WAS a sport. I think for that reason, A Knights Tale captured the spirit rather well.

The drive behind the original question was that I want to see good, fairly accurate jousting scenes. And I am thankful for all the suggestions, though I haven't seen the movies yet.

Daffy Doug03 Aug 2009 3:03 p.m. PST

I've read somewhere that jousting was staged in the American colonies as late as the early 1700's. Anybody care to confirm or deny that?…

Lion in the Stars04 Aug 2009 4:39 p.m. PST

Funny, the SCAdians I know thought that the jousting in Knight's Tale was the most 'historical': ie, the scene was like a modern sport, the same way that jousting was the sport of the time.

IronMike05 Aug 2009 4:16 a.m. PST

Lion-
I live in the midwest, a location notorious for it's ludicrously high 'period police' content. I've even seen the PP crowd second-guess museums…

skaran06 Aug 2009 10:49 a.m. PST

There is a nice jousting scene in the Katherine Hepburn/Peter O'Toole film "The Lion in Winter" I don't kow what the remake is like but if you want to see a dysfunctional 12th century family in action this is the film for you.
