I have many of Robert Halls books on War of the Spanish Succession uniforms. I have on on French infantry. I need help understanding a plate.

On the plates there is a spot which I *think* is the waist coat. E.G. red on champaigne.

On the plates the collars (I think) are in the facing colour. E.G. sault, tesse etc. Is this the collar I'm seeing in colour on the plate or something else?

My other sources don't mention these details.

Cheers

Neil

WSS uniforms didn't have collars. They had huge cuffs though. Also wore a high neck stock.

Looking at a schematic? Could it be the shoulder tab? Some uniforms had a tab (usually) on/just behind the left shoulder to keep the ammo pouch strap from shifting. I've seen some "colored" and / or piped in some of those plates.

Here is a tiny scan, where I deliberately whacked the quality to a minimum, to show you what I mean without costing the author anything:

the "waistcoat" (If I'm right) and the "collar" are there

I got a very helpful response by email. The collar is probably later (1720) than my period of interest. The waistcoat is correct.

from the link above, could the "collar" be the top of the waistcoat, with a tighter neckline than the coat's?

I'll check through some more plates tomorrow and see if there is a correspondence.

I had a whip through RHs plates. There are instances where the "collar" and waist coat differ in colour.

I think the collar is post 1720. So it doesn't concern me.

I've finished the last of my Danish WSS infantry. Will post pics to my blog tomorrow
