Here are some more Byzantine Army pics on my blog. Weather and time both permitted today! Thanks Jim – your sage "blog" advice worked perfectly!

Well for what ever reason I cant post on the blog.
I have Byzantines enough to cover 500 to 1461 AD, so I know about "monsters".
Except for my Blancherae, my banners look like snot next to yours.

LBMS do some good stuff.

A great finishing touch to your Byzantines and an easy way to tart up tired old boys like mine.

I know it is a matter of personal taste but am intrigued by the horse armour on later Byzantines. Apart from cataphracts did the later 10th century armies have armoured horses? Is there any evidence for this?

Were you ever tempted by the Essex Miniatures 28mm range of later Byzantines – their Tagmata lancer is straight out of the Osprey you noted and the archer has loads of character.

Nice job in any event!

Yes, I actually have some Essex archers. I replaced the heads on them as they were huge for some reason. They are pictured on my first blog. I do like the Essex Klibanophoros figure, but I went with the Crusader brand for those. For some reason the Essex Byzantine figures are HUGE – almost 30mm rather than 25-28mm. They just didn't mix well with my other stuff. The archers that I did use I put on Hinchliffe horses which are smaller (true 25mm) and the look worked for me.

I have no clue if later Byzantine armies had armored horses but a lot of manufacturers make them, I like the look, and there you have it! ;-)

Mithridates,

Did some looking (finally!) for evidence for Byzantine later horse armor. Found a picture from a 14th c. Byzantine manuscript entitled The Romance of Alexander the Great that clearly shows two armored horses in a Byzantine army. The artist must have had something to model the picture from.

Thanks – intersting to hear this as earlier icons and other sources show unarmoured horses even for what could be the cataphracts.

Logically an army fighting horse archers would armour their horses – say against the Sasanids and Seljuk Turks. At the same time the ability to move fast against say Arab raiders in the 9th century would suggest more lightly equipped troops.

If WRG is any guide the thematics and tagmata loose their armoured horses in the Nikephorian period 10/11th centuries – except for the short lived cataphracts.

Bottom line – do as you think best and do what works for you. In almost all cases your opponents will be understanding. And let's face it, your army does look the picture with those armoured horses!

Cheers

Garry
