That secret wisdom is reserved for wargamming's Master Baiters ROTFL! Probably the best double entendre I've heard on TMP. Jonathan Swift would be most proud! As for this thread, it's sounds like a |

I am far, far too young to remember the good old days, so out of curiosity, what was the one scale and one rule set every one used? I am under the impression that the ruleset in question was Little Wars from Mr Wells, due to there being no other rules available. Not sure what was the scale used back then, though. Probably something like 59 mm. |
Inari7 | 27 Jul 2009 10:36 a.m. PST |
out of curiosity, what was the one scale and one rule set every one used The only true scale 22.34 and 3/4th mm One only true rule set is Gary Fletcher Jackson's WWII.5 Zombie SS Ninja Super Cat-girl Abstract Giant Robot Leather fetish Cowboy Rampage 4th edition That's what EVERYONE played when I was a wee lad. If you don't play this game then I would have no option but to feel superior, and HAVE to look down upon anyone who does not play or acknowledge the true genius of the system. |

@CPbelt, I think John may have started this tread with a sincere frustration with the lack of manners many gamers show to different viewpoints. The problem he highlights is a real challenge to the growth of the hobby. |

I can't abide by anyone who doesn't play by Chuck Norris' rules. It's Chuck's way or the highway and Chuck never looses! |

Personally, I agree with Allen. A lot of gamers are certainly Master Baiters. |

I tend to fall into the "anti-points value" school. My reasons are simple. Points value based rules tend to encourage tournament style play and tournaments brings out the rules lawyer. Case in point – I was invited to play of FoW. I made a move but was stopped because I was 1mm within some ZoC so had to make a completely illogical move to conform to the rules. Great. That said, if you want to play any form of tournament fine. Do understand if I continue playing my 'elitist' rules because I play with a group of gentlemen (and the occasional lady) not a group who put the letter of the rules over the spirit of the period. |
Martian Root Canal | 27 Jul 2009 11:19 a.m. PST |
To resolve this properly, we must assign point values to the simulationists and to the anti-pointists. We can evaluate the worth of said points after several rounds of solid thrashings, then adjust the values in time to sell another edition of the values! |

Any scale is fine as long as you use white primer
no other color is suitable . Gaming is like a religion ,We will find some way to fight over it . :) |

Damm! I like point games
but can't like FoW. And I tried! I swear
I tried! (By the way
Would like anyone buy two really well painted FoW Companies? One is German (Middle War) and the other is British paratroopers.) |
Rogzombie | 27 Jul 2009 12:20 p.m. PST |
Theres a lot of painters looking down their long noses as well. If you dont do nmm or have a golden demon you are tabletop scum to them. Well, remember what Triple H and Michaels used to say

I think that all right thinking people ought to think the way I think! It's particularly silly in our hobby but look at the way folks get about favourite movies or actors or rock bands. "You listen to that band? They're soooo lame!" We invest a lot of time and thought into coming ot the conclusions we do, so naturally we can't understand why anyone would think otherwise. I've met Evangelicals in many other things than religion. |
GoodBye | 27 Jul 2009 12:35 p.m. PST |
It saddens me to see OFM play Flames of War with his 2000 point Army of Gondor! It's totally appropriate as they usually face the Ravendancers Lance of Mechs. D~ |
20thmaine | 27 Jul 2009 12:35 p.m. PST |
That John The OFM ! I'd like to agree with what you say, but there is a sticking point. The way I play (if it differs to the way you play) is superior. 'Cos if your way was superior then I'd be dumb not to play the same way. I've done a poll of my gaming buddies to see if I'm dumb. Then I asked some people with better opinions. It appears that I'm not dumb. So, my way is superior FOR ME. It may be totally lousy for you, of course. I do sometimes think (and even type) that an approach seems, err, sub-optimal (IMHO). It's usually associated with "debates" where one side want to be spoon fed everything and not have to do any thinking for themselves. The one true scale is of course 1/72nd. The one true size is 22mm, which is close enough for jazz. |

If you proles would only play proper games you would not have to complain about it. What part of the bylaws did you not read or understand ? The "serious" historical gamers get to make fun of the tin-pushing rabble. Just as they get to make fun of Magic players, who in turn get to laugh at LARP'ers who can make fun of Cosplayers, who make fun of Stormtroopers, who make fun of Klingons, who laugh at Furries and that strange short fellow with a lisp called Roderick. Oh dear, there come the chess players again to fling dung at the windows ! |

I should have clarified the move I was forced to make. My unit of cavalry is in a two deep column moving east to west. A unit of heavy infantry is north of my cavalry moving south. I made my move and stop. The heavy infantry moved south and where then at the limit of their move but overlapped the rear of my cavalry base by 1mm. I wished to continue moving west. The FoG rules tell me I have now to move south driving by the HI because they have an overlap of 1mm. This does not make well disposed to the rules. My fault for playing a rules lawyer. |

Reminds me of when a friend a I joined a game at H-con last year. The other players assumed that because we hadn't played with these particular rules, that we had never played that genre before. As a matter of fact, it was my favorite genre. They gave us the "easiest" job, which translated into giving us the dog units, which they considered sitting ducks, but which were required to meet the victory conditions. I got beat up, but I got a kill, and protected my friend's tail while he made the winning move. Funnily enough, we had to ignore advice from the "experts" that would have gotten us both killed and lost the game for sure for our side if we had listened to it. Right on, John. |

I like them- gives people something to talk about. Nothing wrong in trying to convince others that your way is the right way. In real life you should judge your audience- think things on the internet need to be a tad more free. |

Sounds GREAT ! You wouldn't happen to have an old copy you'd care to sell me, would you ? Always up for a historically-accurate, fun simulation of that period ! I preume the only figures appropriate to use would be the Marx Fort Huachuca playset, with the zombie linguists, fetish zombies, and zombie pole-dancers (for the Master Baiters out there
) ? |
