I just saw some figures from Celtos for sale and they were mighty fine, very character filled. I had the rules once upon a time (still might somewhere in the game closet) and I thought the system was good, too. Great minis, check. Good rules, check. So why didn't it catch on?

Cash problems caused the company to fold and I think they lost focus and momentum… TMP link

"Cash problems caused the company to fold…"

…how many times, in various incarnations?

I believe the cause of the last problem was a member of staff thieving rather than the company itself just folding. Saying that they do have terrible luck, especially when their games are always good and they have some of the best sculptors working for them!

It's a good game with great minis. I believe they were originally planned to be redos for some of the older Chronopia models, but Target went under while they were still being worked on. The Gaels and Elves have some resemblence to Chronopia's Sons of Kronos and Elves.

They then ended up as a new game, much like Void was the successor to Warzone 2nd Edition, I think Celtos was the successor to Chronopia.

Like I said before, the game is good, however the model line didn't quite support the army lists in the core rulebook. There were lots of models with no stats, and some units with no models. Then the Gael Forcebook came out, there were some tweaks to the rules and a complete and expanded army list that included all the special characters in the model line as well as a bunch more. The book was beautifully laid out and the first of the series for each faction. However the units were all re-valued and not very compatible with the army lists from the core rulebook.

Unfortunately i-Kore went under and Urban Mammoth did support it for a while, even released a few models that were in the works during their bankruptcy. However it was then sold off to Brigade Games, who were supposed to re-vamp the rules and put out a new game system. It's been several years now and they still haven't put out a new rulebook. However they did release some more models to fill in a few of the under represented factions like the Vanir (dwarves).

would the models work with the Armies of Arcana rules??

RobH26 Jul 2009 2:35 a.m. PST

Yes they would work with AoA, or any 28mm Fantasy ruleset. You have to like the exaggerated weapon look, but if you do, they are some of the best detailed and cast figures around.

The Celtos rules are also excellent in their own right, as CK says there are some gaps in the stats in the army lists, but enough similar exists to enable some "creative" guesswork.

I mix my Celtos and Chronopia models to fill in the gaps between the two game systems.

Although the Chronopia line is a bit more complete, some of the models are just really bad.

Early Chronopia miniatures are often that way, and are a better match for Leviathan. The later models are much better, and many of them blend well with Celtos.

Yes, Mr. White's work on both of those lines was fantastic.
