Ents look great!

As for the Romans from Miniart, I was not fond of them. I own a box and found the cleanup to be a chore like no other. The detail is soft and a little boring. PSR has them at 24mm which should match with HaT roman infantry. Miniart are bigger and chunkier. So, they were a bit of a disappointment.

If you really like them, I still do not like them as Elves. The Caesar Elves look quite nice and are not too over-the-top. Eureke Elves are about 18-19mm to the eye which probably puts them at 22mm to the top of the head. Those are nice looking figures as well.

Just my 2 cents. Good call on the Ents. Sorry to be a fly in the ointment on the Elves.

Fantastic tree punishments there!

Hi John,

No worries about your opinions re the miniart. They do match with the Hat Late Romans sizewise though a bit on the chunky side. The cleanup is really a chore as I discovered when I started work on them. Not to worry though because I still ordered two boxes of the Caesar Elves for good measure:)

Whether folks like your envisionment or not, it is a great example of how other things are convertible/adaptable into other toys we need but aren't available in the size / format / price we are after.

Indeed! Keep up the good work! Looking forward to the next installment!

Nice. You can also add some woodland scenics armatures if you want more branches and some clump foliage. Here is link to pictures of my Ent army for 10mm.

I also used the mage knight figure butat 10mm he is the greater ent.

I recently found that Warlord makes "Saprolings" which might work for smaller ents for you. They will be joining my army soon.

Have you seen the Red Box Orcs?

Thanks,

John

Just saw a pic at Michtoy soldier and it made me want a set. My supplier though does not have it yet ( Hannants). It's going at $ 14.99 excluding shipping versus the $8 USD with shipping for the Caesar Orcs thru Hannants UK. The sculpts look good though --- imho better than Caesar's "Warcraft" look -- but I may try the Eureka 18mm Orcs first, then Rebelmini's 20mm orcs second. Has anyone done business with Michigan Toy Soldier? I spent hours surfing their site, salivating all the while…oh my poor wallet…

I have the Eureka orcs, and they are a little on the small side. They work very well with my 15mm humans from Old Glory (which are closer to 18mm anyway).

The Rebel Minis orcs are a little larger.

Another great option (if you want metal) is the Goblin Factory
thegoblinfactory.com/home.htm
They say that the miniatures are 25mm, but they are very small for 25mm, and larger than my 15mm. I will take some pics and upload them tonight. They are still great figures!

Great blog!

How does AD+D Battlesystem 2/e compare to Warmaster / Middle Earth?

Need I look further than Warmaster / Middle Earth or Battle of Five Armies for a mass scale LOTR rules set?

Curious on your thoughts in regards to Warmaster Middle Earth vs. Battle of Five Armies. Are there big differences?

Thanks much for the tips on what minis you're choosing.

Akudjinn, Thanks for checking it out. As to a comparison of
AD&D Battlesystem 2nd Ed (ADDB2nd) & Warmaster Middle Earth(WMME), I'll give it a try:

ADDB2nd: Mass battle with units composed of 3 and up figures – based individually or in stands; has a largish skirmish feel; movement is " i-go-you-go", based on die roll initiative; combat involves bucket-of-dice-rolling (depends on number of bases/figures in contact with enemy); combat damage is based on a die-size matrix ( which I really like)- the bigger the attack die, the more likely it will create damage as well as reduce the enemy unit; morale dictates how the unit responds to attacks, casualties, etc; ability of units to use special attacks, formations, etc – shield wall, first strike, set pikes, etc.; magic system -- aside from thje few direct damage spells-- basically adds variations to a unit's combat, movement, morale, armor and command capabilities.

WMME: mass combat with units being composed of 3 stands. Flavor is very mass battles because of the command and control mechanism -- units are given orders but can lose their ability to move, etc due to bad die rolls; combat is simultaneous and results are drawn from predefined combat outcomes; combat is similar to ADDB2nd-- bucket-of-dice-rolling dependent on number of bases in contact with enemy and dictates what combat outcomes can or should be done -- retreat, hold, pursue, advance, etc.; But WMME takes into account the difference between the fantasy race tropes assumed by the original Warmaster based on GW's Old World milieu and the racial/army differences of Tolkien's Middel Earth legendarium. So, there would be slightly different stats for units such as tribal goblins and Isengard Orcs. The differences would be very small, such as one having an armor save of 5+ and the other without; the changes however small, give certain nuances that add to the flavor of the units concerned. I especially like the handling of the Noldor vs the Sindar wherein the Noldor are treated like Chaos warriors while the Sindar are treated like GW spearelves -- the small differences impact the unit's use in a large way.

I'll try to collect my thoughts on these and write up a better comparison and post it at my blog. As for the difference between Wamaster and Battle of Five Armies, I cannot rtell as I do not have a copy of the Battle of Five Armies. From the TMP posts though, I assume they are very similar, if not the same. I hope my ramblings above were coherent enough. thanks!

Nice job on the ents. Very Hoom-tastic. I'd tuck a little scenery foliage into the little hollow on top of the head (or painted sponge if you want something more durable).
